Why has my favourite skin-care product or makeup colour been discontinued?
We're sorry if your favourite Paula's Choice skin care or makeup product has been discontinued. Products sometimes are discontinued due to the availability of certain ingredients. Sometimes these products will eventually be replaced by new and improved formulations. The decision to discontinue an item is never done impulsively. Many different factors are taken into account, including consumer preferences and purchasing patterns, as well as the availability of new ingredients and more advanced formulations. Even some of Paula's personal favourites have been discontinued! We do realize that customers may want to stock up if their favourites are being discontinued, so we generally make discontinued products and shades available at 25-50% off retail (with no limits on the number you can purchase) on our Clearance page for as long as they are in stock. In our efforts to continually improve the line and respond to customer feedback, you will see that new colours and formulas, some of which may be variations on your favourites, are introduced on an ongoing basis.

How long will my Paula's Choice products last once they are opened?
The FDA has no regulations or guidelines on the expiration date for skin-care or makeup products. Paula's Choice products undergo three year stability/shelf life testing, but this only examines heat variables (freezing or overheating, for instance) and microbial issues under ideal storage conditions. This type of testing doesn't take into account how consumers use the products on a daily basis. Cosmetics and skin-care products that have been improperly stored—for example, exposed to sunlight, left open, contaminated (any product packaged in a jar has almost a 100% risk of being contaminated)— may deteriorate substantially within one year. On the other hand, Paula's Choice products stored under ideal conditions may be acceptable long after any suggested "use by" dates.

So what should you do? In general, it is best to toss out Paula's Choice cosmetics placed near the eyelashes (like mascara) after four to six months of use. For eyeshadows, some ophthalmologists recommend discarding after one year. The usage time for eye-area cosmetics is more limited than for other products. Because of microbial exposure and the risk of eye infections, some industry experts even recommend replacing mascara every three months because of how close it gets to the cornea and lens of the eye. If your Paula's Choice mascara becomes dry, discard it. Do not add water or saliva to moisten it as that will introduce bacteria into the product. If you have an eye infection, consult a physician immediately, stop using all eye-area cosmetics, and discard those you were using when the infection occurred.

For Paula's Choice skin care products (cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliants, foundations), we recommend discarding after one to two years of use. Products that have developed a strange odor or dramatic texture change should be discarded immediately. But remember, Paula's Choice products do not contain fragrance, so the actual ingredients are the aroma of the product. So you would want to be aware of a dramatic change in the product's scent. Paula's Choice sunscreens carry expiration dates so you know when the active ingredients are past their prime (this does not mean the sunscreen is no longer effective, just that it is likely not as potent as it once was).

Are your products safe to use during pregnancy?
It is always best to consult with your doctor on these issues because he or she is the one who is best qualified to provide advice about your condition. However, I understand that it is frustrating when the doctor you speak to doesn't have an opinion on something you are worried about. The following information is only my viewpoint, and although it is based on research, it is still essential that you review it with your physician.

There is little to no research about toxicity related to pregnancy for cosmetic ingredients. However, if it were me, the only thing I would avoid would be prescription retinoids and maybe products with retinol (because of its distant relation to retinoids), but even that's a stretch. Retinyl palmitate (and the small amounts of it used in cosmetics) is so far removed from the prescription ingredient in Renova and Retin-A that it bears little resemblance to any retinoid.

I have Celiac disease. Which Paula's Choice products contain the wheat or gluten ingredients I should avoid?
The majority of Paula's Choice products are gluten-free; however, the following items do contain wheat and/or gluten:

  • Lip & Body Treatment Balm, Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel all contain wheat germ oil.
  • All Over Hair & Body Shampoo and Hydrating Treatment Cream contain wheat protein.
  • Beautiful Body Butter and Silky Start Sugar Scrub contain either oat kernel extract or oat flour (keep in mind that research has shown most Celiacs can tolerate oats in any form).
  • Smooth Finish Conditioner contains wheat amino acids.
  • Brow/Hair Tint contains wheat protein and oligosacharrides.
  • Super Antioxidant Concentrate contains oat beta-glucan, which is a type of yeast derived from oats. Note: this may be OK for Celiacs—please check with your doctor.
  • HydraLight Moisture Infusing Lotion contains oat kernal extract, which is a topical anti-irritant.

Please note: Some Celiacs can tolerate a mild amount of wheat or gluten (which would be the case with cosmetics) and topical exposure is different from ingestion. However, Paula's Choice recommends that you always consult with your physician if there is any doubt.

What Paula's Choice products are appropriate for African-American skin?
While many women of colour feel their skin care needs differ from those of Caucasian women, nothing could be further from the truth. Regardless of colour or ethnic background, all skin is subject to a range of virtually identical problems with similar considerations. Whether it is dry or oily skin, blemishes, scarring, wrinkles, skin discolorations, rashes, rosacea, sensitivity, or sun damage, the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment is the same for all men and women. There are certainly some distinctions between varying ethnic groups when it comes to skin problems and skin-care options, but overall these differences are minor in comparison to the number of similarities. Think of it this way: regardless of skin colour, dietary needs remain the same. A high-calorie diet results in weight gain, an unhealthy diet can cause health risks, and if you don’t eat you die, regardless of your skin colour. As far as skin care goes, skin is an organ (the largest in the human body) and needs the same ingredients and formulations to be healthy or deal with various skin concerns.

Research on this topic supports the points above while also noting the distinctive traits between ethnic skin tones, though these traits don’t mean different products are needed for treatment. According to an article in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (February 2002, pages 41–62) “There is not a wealth of data on racial and ethnic differences in skin and hair structure, physiology, and function. What studies do exist involve small patient populations and often have methodological flaws. Consequently, few definitive conclusions can be made. The literature does support a racial differential in epidermal melanin [pigment] content and melanosome dispersion in people of colour compared with fair-skinned persons…. These differences could at least in part account for the lower incidence of skin cancer in certain people of colour compared with fair-skinned persons; a lower incidence and different presentation of photo aging; pigmentation disorders in people with skin of colour; and a higher incidence of certain types of alopecia [loss of hair] in Africans and African Americans compared with those of other ancestry.” While skin cancer may not be as much of a threat or concern, skin discolorations resulting from unprotected sun exposure or hormonal concerns are the same as that for women with lighter skin.

If there is any difference noted in the research it is the imperative need to treat darker skin tones gently. When irritated, darker skin tones can stimulate hyperpigmentation causing patches of dark or grayish skin discolorations. Though this is easily treated, the main focus should be prevention. Given my fervent belief over the years that all skin types need to be treated gently, it’s encouraging there is research pointing that way for women of colour as well. When skin is irritated it cannot protect itself from the environment, it causes collagen and elastin to break down, it hurts the skin’s immune response, and can cause skin to become dry and flaky.

Regardless of skin colour or ethnicity, all skin needs a gentle cleanser, effective exfoliant, state-of-the-art moisturizer (over dry areas), a sunscreen rated SPF 15 or greater containing UVA-protecting ingredients of avobenzone, titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide, and appropriate treatments for skin discolorations (hydroquinone-based products), blemishes, and wrinkles.

Animal Testing/Animal By-Products

Do you test on animals?
Paula's Choice has never tested on animals and never will. We also support many animal-centered charities like the Humane Society, ASPCA and NAVS.

Are Paula’s Choice products vegan, or do any of them contain animal by-products?
The majority of Paula's Choice products contain no animal ingredients, but some do contain beeswax, lanolin or lanolin derivatives, cholesterol, and ceramide.

The following products contain lanolin (which is extracted from sheep's wool) or a derivative of lanolin: Lip & Body Treatment Balm, Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, Smooth Matte Lipstick, Soft Matte Blush shades Dusty Rose, Pale Rose, Pale Peach, and Contour Brown, and Soft Shine Moisturizing Lip Gloss.

The following products contain beeswax: Brow/Hair Tint, Constant Colour Lip Paint, Epic Lengths Mascara, Hydrating Treatment Cream, Lip & Body Treatment Balm, Lush Mascara, Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, Slip Into Silk Body Lotion, Smooth Matte Lipstick, and Soft Cream Lipstick.

The following products contain cholesterol: Hydrating Treatment Cream, Lip & Body Treatment Balm (contains an ester of cholesterol), Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, and Skin Balancing Toner.

The following products contain ceramide: Hydrating Treatment Cream and Skin Balancing Toner.

Our makeup brushes, except for the synthetic Concealer Brush and Precision Liner Brush, are made from animal hair.

Cleansers

Besides the skin type they're formulated for, what is the difference between the four Paula's Choice cleansers? Is one stronger?
We now offer two options for combination/oily skin and two options for normal/dry skin though many people find that they like to alternate depending on the time of year (skin tends to be more dry in winter). One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin is a water-based gel cleanser that feels light and refreshing, while being extremely effective for removing makeup, and easy to rinse from the skin. Skin Balancing Cleanser for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin has a unique, cushiony-soft texture and slight foaming action. It is our most concentrated cleanser, thoroughly removes makeup, and is also easy to rinse. One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin has more skin-conditioning agents, so it feels more cushiony on the skin yet still rinses easily and completely removes makeup. Skin Recovery Cleanser is for dry to very dry and/or sensitive skins. It is exceptionally mild and was designed to be extra comfortable (but not greasy) over dry skin, while still rinsing easily, and thoroughly cleaning the face.

What cleanser should I use if I have an oily t-zone but I am dry around my mouth and cheeks?
Your two best options are the One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin or Skin Balancing Cleanser and then a moisturizer on the dry areas. If you do not see improvement using with either of these cleansers then consider trying the One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin.

I have oily skin. Which cleanser should I use?
It all depends on personal preference. If you prefer a super-light, clean-rinsing gel cleanser, the One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin is ideal. If you prefer a creamier cleanser that foams yet rinses completely with no residue, Skin Balancing Cleanser is ideal.

Will Skin Balancing Cleanser leave my skin feeling dry & taut?
No—Skin Balancing Cleanser was carefully formulated to thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove makeup without stripping or drying. It contains gentle but remarkably effective cleansing agents in a base that feels silky and protective. It is possible someone with very dry skin will find Skin Balancing Cleanser too strong for them, but this cleanser is not meant for that skin type (Skin Recovery Cleanser is preferred).

Should I alternate cleansers if my skin is oilier or drier at different times of the year (such as oilier in summer or drier in winter)?
You most certainly can and probably should. If your skin is oilier in the summer, you may need a more thorough cleanser to remove oil buildup, sunscreen, and makeup. An example would be switching from our One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin to our Skin Balancing Cleanser. In contrast, because dry, cold weather tends to create dry skin, you may want to switch to a creamier water-soluble cleanser during winter. An example would be switching from Paula's Choice One Step Face Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin to our Skin Recovery Cleanser for Normal to Very Dry Skin.

Will the cleansers remove all of my makeup?
They will remove all but ultra-matte foundations (like Revlon ColourStay Lite). For ultra-matte or "transfer-resistant" foundations, we recommend using a very clean washcloth with your cleanser, or, if needed, a silicone-based makeup remover like our Gentle Touch Makeup Remover). Gently massage in a circular pattern, then follow with any Paula's Choice cleanser.

Do Paula's Choice cleansers foam or lather?
Some of our cleansers (such as Skin Balancing Cleanser) create a slight lather but it is a myth that the amount of foaming has anything to do with cleanser effectiveness. All Paula's Choice cleansers will remove makeup and leave your skin soft and smooth.

Are the cleansers okay to use on my kids? Teenagers?
The cleansers are fine for any age, although if you have an infant or toddler, please check with your doctor first.

Should I use the cleanser once or twice a day?
In the morning you want to remove all of the dead skin cells that have shed overnight, and at night you want to remove the makeup, excess oil, and dirt, so you should cleanse twice per day.

How much do I use?
An amount the size of a nickel should be perfect, but you may need more or less depending on personal preference and how much makeup you routinely wear.

Are all of the cleansers pH balanced?
The pH for the cleansers is between 5.5-6.3, the same as the skin's pH range.

Will the cleansers sting if they get in my eyes?

As is the case when almost any skin-care product gets in your eyes, our cleansers could potentially cause your eyes to sting. It is often not the cleanser itself that causes the stinging, but the cleanser mixed with your makeup. None of our products contain fragrances and known irritants so our cleansers are very gentle and all of them are water-soluble.

Why doesn't Paula make a face scrub?
Topical scrubs are simple ways to mechanically exfoliate skin, but these can be abrasive and harsh on the skin, and they also exfoliate unevenly. A good deal of research has established that chemical exfoliants such as salicylic acid (BHA) and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are not only effective for gently removing excess surface cells, but they also increase collagen production, promote cell turnover, reduce the appearance of skin discolorations, and improve the overall health of the skin. These additional benefits make an AHA or BHA product preferred to exfoliating skin with a topical scrub.

Super Antioxidant Concentrates

What do these products do?
The primary purpose of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates is to supply the skin with a selection of effective and potent antioxidants and anti-irritants. Each formula has a silky silicone base that efficiently delivers the antioxidants into the top layers of skin and helps enhance the product's stability. Research has established that routinely applying antioxidants reduces the effect of environmental aggressors (such as sun exposure, cigarette smoke, auto exhaust, pollution), and helps skin to stay healthy and function properly (Sources: Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, June 2003, pages 866-874 and January 2003, pages 1-19; and Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology , November 2002, pages 79-87).

What are the benefits of antioxidants?
Topically-applied antioxidants are believed to help mitigate free-radical damage caused primarily by sun exposure, oxygen, and pollution. (Free-radical damage is a chain-reaction process where "broken" molecules attempt to "fix" themselves to the detriment of other, unbroken molecules--a process that is ongoing and is believed to be a prime factor in how the skin and body age). Although extensive research exists illustrating the role of antioxidants in preventing free-radical damage and some forms of skin damage, exactly how much antioxidants are needed and whether or not free-radical damage can be substantially slowed to prevent wrinkles is still an unknown. Nonetheless, the vast majority of researchers believe that topically-applied antioxidants do have merit for all skin types to keep skin healthy and help prevent sun damage and improve cell function. Further, antioxidants have been conclusively shown to exert a positive effect on reducing skin irritation and inflammation, and that is a crucial step in creating or maintaining healthy, vibrant skin and, therefore potentially reducing wrinkles (Sources: International Journal of Experimental Pathology, August 2000, pages 257-263 and Skin Pharmacology and Applied Skin Physiology, May-August 2000, pages 143-149).

How do I use the Super Antioxidant Concentrates?
After determining which one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates to use, you may apply it morning and/or evening after cleansing and/or toning. The formulas were designed to be used under or over moisturizer. If you elect to apply one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates in the morning, it should be used before sunscreen and/or foundation with sunscreen. If you use one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates with an AHA or BHA product, the exfoliant is applied first. The same application order should be used when pairing one of our Blemish Fighting Solutions with a Super Antioxidant Concentrate product. If you are using topical prescription products such as Renova, MetroGel, or TriLuma, apply them before using one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates.

Do I need a moisturizer in addition to one of the Super Antioxidant Concentrates?
It depends on your skin's needs. Details about each Super Antioxidant Concentrate are below, but keep in mind that part of what makes them all unique is that each one has a silky serum texture which differs from traditional lotion or cream moisturizers and can be combined for best results. They all reinforce the skin's structure, reduce free-radical and environmental damage, and contain cell-communicating ingredients. This combination of elements helps normalize skin which can be enough for some people to maintain their skin's healthy moisture balance.

However, depending on your skin type and your preferences, you may want to use the Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate or the original Super Antioxidant Concentrate in addition to your moisturizer or sunscreen, especially around the eyes and on dry areas. These would be worn over your moisturizer at night and under your sunscreen during the day. (The Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate has special considerations explained below.)

Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate is the most emollient of the three Super Antioxidant Concentrates. In addition to all of the beneficial elements listed above, it also contains plant oils that have a superior moisturizing effect on skin. However, for those with normal to very dry skin it can be extremely beneficial to apply it over a lotion or cream moisturizer. It can be used all over the face, including the eye area.

Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate is an oil-absorbing formulation that works beautifully over oily areas of the face, creating a smooth matte finish that can last all day. It also works well over normal areas of the face. However, if you have dry skin it is best not to use the Skin Balancing Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate over those areas.

Our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate is somewhere in between and is best for normal skin. It works well over other types of moisturizers in lotion or cream form. It can also be used all over the face including the eye area.

What is the difference between Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and the original Super Antioxidant Concentrate? How does it compare to Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate?
Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate contains several plant oils and a greater variety of antioxidants known to be especially beneficial for normal to very dry skin than our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate. Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contains special dry-finish silicones and absorbent ingredients that make it ideal for normal to very oily skin. The anti-irritants in Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate were specially selected to minimize redness and inflammation resulting from blemishes. Our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate is an option for all skin types that supplies skin with several antioxidants.

Why are there colour variations in the Super Antioxidants Concentrates?
Both our Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain the ingredient astaxanthin. This ingredient is part of the carotenoid family (found abundantly in carrots and salmon; this ingredient causes them to have an orange colour). Astaxanthin functions as an exceptionally potent, powerful antioxidant. Depending on fluctuations in the natural colouration of the raw material (one of the drawbacks of natural sources of antioxidants), it is possible that this ingredient will impart a light to vivid coral or orange hue. This colour is completely natural, and is not visible on skin once it is absorbed. Therefore, you may notice some tubes of Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant or Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate are perfectly clear while others exhibit a hint of yellow or orange. Regardless of the level of colour (or lack thereof), these are safe, exceptionally effective products that promote healthy, radiant skin.

I currently use Super Antioxidant Concentrate. Should I switch to Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate or Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate?
That depends. If your skin is normal to very oily and prone to blemishes, it will gain greater benefit from potent levels of antioxidants and anti-irritants, so Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate would be preferred. If your skin does not have bothersome oily or blemish-prone areas, there is every reason to keep using our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate. If your skin type is drier than normal, then your skin will gain greater benefit from the Skin Recovery Antioxidant Concentrate.

Is the texture of Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate similar to Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Moisture Gel?
No. Although both products contain silicone, Skin Balancing Moisture Gel is a silicone-in-water emulsion, designed to lightly hydrate the skin and supply essential water-binding agents without feeling heavy or greasy. Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate is a non-aqueous serum that has a unique feel and provides more protection than moisturization. Its primary purpose is to supply the skin with a potent dose of antioxidants while helping to absorb excess oil. If you have normal to oily/combination skin, try applying Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate in the morning, under foundation that contains sunscreen and using Skin Balancing Moisture Gel in the evening.

Does Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate decrease the appearance of pores?
The silicone polymers in this product float over skin and minimally "fill in" pores, creating a smoother surface. The effect (as with all such products) is temporary and how long it lasts depends on your pore size and skin's oil output, as well as other products used at the same time. Overall, this product is not capable of reducing pore size, but it's conceivable this effect will be noticed and can be prolonged by pairing it with a matte finish foundation and powder.

Since Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate both contain retinol, do they increase sensitivity to the sun?
Unlike tretinoin (all trans retinoic acid), retinol does not appear to make skin more sensitive to the sun. Further, research has shown that unprotected skin exposed to UVB radiation loses the vitamin A content that is present in skin. Therefore, as always, we recommend daily application of an effective sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher. Paula's Choice sunscreens are carefully formulated to provide broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection while also supplying skin with antioxidants. They perfectly complement the potent cocktail of antioxidants in any of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates.

Since both Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain retinol, is it OK to combine them with a product that contains benzoyl peroxide?
Yes, this combination (if needed) is fine. The only caution is to pay attention to your skin’s response. If irritation develops, we suggest applying the benzoyl peroxide product in the morning and using one of our Super Antioxidant Concentrates at night. Alternately, you can apply the benzoyl peroxide product where needed, and apply the Super Antioxidant Concentrate product elsewhere. If you are using a prescription product with tretinoin (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, Avita), we recommend applying the benzoyl peroxide separately. Because tretinoin is more potent and less stable than retinol, benzoyl peroxide can render it ineffective when the two active ingredients are combined. Please note : If you are using a prescription product that contains benzoyl peroxide, please consult your physician before making any changes to your skin-care routine.

Since Paula's Choice sunscreens and moisturizers already contain antioxidants, why do I need a separate product?

As research on topical application of antioxidants continues, it is becoming increasingly apparent that what works best is to give the skin generous amounts and a diverse mix. In other words, adding increased levels of antioxidants to your skin-care routine is a very good thing, and definitely not harmful. This is a win-win situation for the health and appearance of your skin! Even if antioxidants turn out to be less impressive than we think, the skin will still benefit from their anti-irritant and anti-inflammatory properties.

I use a prescription product with tretinoin (i.e. Retina-A, Renova, Tazorac). Since Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate and Skin Balancing Super Antioxidant Mattifying Concentrate contain retinol, is it OK to combine them?
We are not aware of any contraindications surrounding the use of tretinoin and retinol and believe this combination is beneficial to skin. However, due to their similarities, retinol has the potential to add to the amount of tretinoin (the active ingredient in prescription products such as Retin-A, Renova, and Tazorac) in the skin. Retinol can be converted to tretinoin in the skin when and if certain enzymes are present. There is a chance that using a product with retinol along with a tretinoin product may increase the side effects of tretinoin therapy, including dry, flaking, or reddened skin. Because this question concerns a prescription drug, we recommend consulting your physician and following his or her advice.

Will the Super Antioxidant Concentrates interfere with any of my other products/medications?
No. These products can be used with any other skin-care product, and are compatible with topical prescription medicines such as MetroLotion, Clindagel, Differin, or hydroscortisone. However, it is always best to check with your physician to be sure your skin-care products are compatible with any medications you may be using.

Although our Super Antioxidant Concentrates do not contain ingredients known to aggravate rosacea, recommending products for this skin condition is tricky because it tends to be more reactive to any cosmetic ingredients, even those typically deemed gentle or non-irritating. The good news is that because antioxidants are inherently anti-inflammatory, most people with rosacea find them to be beneficial. The anti-irritants we included in our Super Antioxidant Concentrates promote further skin soothing, and are generally well-tolerated by those with rosacea. If you are uncertain if these products will be an option for your rosacea-prone skin, please contact us about receiving samples.

Toners

What do toners “tone?” I thought Paula didn’t recommend toners!
Paula has always recommended toners that contain ingredients that are truly beneficial for skin. Toners can be a great after-cleansing step to be sure you’ve removed all of your makeup. When properly formulated, they soothe skin and add hydrating ingredients to make skin softer, not to mention being another leave-on source for antioxidants and other ingredients that improve skin’s healthy functioning.

In the past, most toners (also known as astringents, fresheners, pore cleansers, clarifying lotions, Sea Breeze, or witch hazel) were made primarily of alcohol and other irritating ingredients, which is why Paula was so outspoken about toners being a problem for skin. Although there are still irritating toners to watch out for (particularly those designed for acne-prone skin), there are many available that can be a helpful addition to your skin-care routine. Each Paula’s Choice toner represents a state-of-the-art formulation that is brimming with skin-beneficial ingredients.

How do I know which toner is right for me? Besides skin type, what are the main differences between the four Paula's Choice toners?
All of our toners restore skin, help remove last traces of makeup, are alcohol- and fragrance-free, and contain no unnecessary irritants such as menthol, peppermint, and citrus oils. They are great as an adjunct to a more thorough cleansing routine, especially post-workout or in hot/humid climates. Even more significantly they go beyond the basics by offering skin benefits you can see and feel.

Healthy Skin Refreshing Toner is an excellent choice for normal to oily/combination skin. It provides a weightless finish, and although it feels very light, it supplies skin with potent antioxidants and anti-irritants. Healthy Skin Refreshing Toner is a great option for those who want more protection and a soothing, soft, feeling on their skin, particularly those with sensitive skin. To get the benefits of both toners for normal to oily/combination skin, you may want use Healthy Skin Refreshing Toner in the morning and Skin Balancing Toner in the evening.

Moisture Boost Hydrating Toner contains ingredients that help soothe and restore normal to dry skin, plus it includes a greater amount of glycerin, a key ingredient to make dry skin look and feel better. It also contains a broad range of ingredients that aid the barrier repair process so those with dry skin (or normal skin with occasional dry patches) will receive even more benefit from their Paula’s Choice moisturizer and/or specialty product. Moisture Boost Hydrating feels lighter than our Skin Recovery Toner, yet still provides an array of antioxidants, anti-irritants, and skin-protecting ingredients. To get the benefits of both toners for normal to dry skin, you can use Moisture Boost Hydrating Toner in the morning and Skin Recovery Toner in the evening.

Skin Recovery Toner for normal to very dry skin is an excellent choice for those who need more help protecting their skin from environmental damage or dryness. Skin Recovery Toner has a richer texture than any of our other toners and contains more plant oils and other emollients than our Moisture Boost Hydrating Toner. This is a great option for dry to very dry skin, extremely sun damaged skin, or those dealing with eczema or rosacea accompanied by dry skin.

Skin Balancing Toner for normal to oily/combination skin is excellent for protecting skin from environmental damage or dryness. In addition, its cell-communicating ingredients can, in theory, help balance skin so its oily areas do not worsen or lead to reddened or blemished skin. Skin Balancing Toner uses a more complex formulation than our Healthy Skin Refreshing Toner, and helps restore normal cell function.

Will Paula’s Choice toners remove last traces of makeup?
Yes. All of our toners remove last traces of makeup (from the hairline, jaw line, or corners of the nose). For various differences between our toner formulas, please see the "Which Toner is Right for Me?" question above.

Is it OK to use a combination of toners?
Yes, this is perfectly fine, and can provide skin with multiple benefits. Since all of our toners have the same basic function, you should ideally choose one based on your skin type and skin's needs. An option for using both would be to use either the Skin Balancing or Skin Recovery Toner in the morning and one of our other toners as part of your evening routine.

Should I use a toner in the morning and evening?
You can use a toner morning, evening, or morning and evening—or anytime you want to refresh and soothe your skin!

How moisturizing can a toner really be?
Toners can add hydrating ingredients that soften your skin, and they can soothe the skin. For some skin types this can be all the moisturizer needed. For other skin types it is a great way to enhance the effectiveness of a moisturizer or specialty product. However, even the best-formulated toners will not provide the same level of hydration for dry skin as a well-formulated moisturizer.

How long do I have to wait before my toner dries? Can I apply a treatment product or moisturizer when my skin is still damp from the toner?
All Paula's Choice cleansers, toners, exfoliants, treatment products, and sunscreens are pH balanced to work together, so you don't have to wait between steps. However, if you prefer to wait, there is nothing wrong with that.

Can I use a toner to remove lipstick and eye makeup?
Our toners are not recommended to remove eye makeup. We recommend cleansing first, and then if you need an extra step to make sure you have removed all of your foundation, blush, and lipstick, the toner is a great after-cleansing product. For all types of eye makeup, mascara, and stubborn lipstick, use our Gentle Touch Makeup Remover before or after cleansing.

My face stings when I use a toner. What's wrong?
If our toner is making your face tingle then it may contain an ingredient that is not compatible with your skin, and you should not use it. However our toners are formulated to be gentle and suitable to even the most sensitive skin types. We avoid many of the irritating ingredients other toners contain, such as alcohol, menthol, eucalyptus, and citruses which can cause tingling and can be too harsh for all skin types.

Why doesn't your toner make my face feel fresh or tingly?
Paula's Choice toners do not contain irritating ingredients such as alcohol, menthol, citruses, eucalpytus and the like which can make skin feel tingly or "fresh" but which can be damaging to skin. Generally speaking, skin should not tingle or burn from anything you put on it (AHAs excluded).

Exfoliants, AHA vs. BHA

What's the difference between BHA and AHA?
BHA is oil-soluble and can penetrate into the pore exfoliating accumulated skin cells that clog pores and can also exfoliate on the surface of skin as well. It is best for skin types prone to blackheads and blemishes. AHAs are water-soluble and exfoliate primarily on the surface of the skin. They are generally best for sun-damaged skin that is not prone to blemishes. AHA's also have moisturizing properties.

What are the pH levels for Paula's Choice AHA and the BHA products?
AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) both work best at a pH of 3 to 4. Our 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Solution has a pH of 3.5, and our Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA has a pH of 3. Our 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid both have a pH of 3.2. Our 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel, 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel, and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion have a pH of 3.4. while our Weightless Body Treatment with 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid has a pH of 3.3.

Your AHA products (glycolic acid) have a higher percentage than your BHA products (salicylic acid). Does this mean they are stronger exfoliants?
The difference in concentrations between AHAs and BHA is not a qualitative one. AHAs are not more effective or better than BHA because of the increased concentration needed for one versus the other. Rather, AHAs are most effective at 5% to 10% and BHA at 1% to 2%. There are many examples in skin care where percentage of an ingredient doesn't demonstrate superiority and this is the case here. (Sources: Women's Health In Primary Care, July 2003, pages 333-339; Journal of Dermatological Treatment, April 2004, pages 88-93; Dermatology, January 1999; pages 50-53; Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, April 1997, pages 589-593).

What's the difference between the various 1% and 2% BHA products?
The 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion is in a light lotion base that dries to a matte finish and the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion is in a creamier base that still feels light on the skin yet also moisturizes. These are best for normal to dry or combination skin types with mild to moderate breakouts and blackheads.

The 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel are water-based silky finish formulas that are best for those with normal to oily or combination skin prone to blemishes and blackheads. They absorb quickly and are barely felt on the skin.

The 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid is a clear liquid that contains a slip agent to enhance the penetration of the salicylic acid, while keeping the skin soft and smooth. It is best for someone with normal to very oily skin with stubborn breakouts or blackheads.

What is the difference between the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel and the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion?
The main difference is texture. The 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion has a lightly moisturizing lotion base while our 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel features a water-light gel base that provides slightly less hydration and is barely felt on the skin. Both products contain the same concentration of salicylic acid and have a pH level low enough to facilitate exfoliation. Both products are also appropriate for all skin types, though those with oily to very oily skin may naturally prefer the 1% BHA Gel's texture.

I currently use the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion. Should I switch to the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel? Can I use both?
It is entirely a matter of personal preference. If the texture and finish of the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion appeal to you and has been working for your skin, then there is no reason to switch. However, if you want an even lighter texture or your skin has become oilier (such as can occur seasonally) then the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel may be an option for you. It is perfectly fine to use both of our 1% BHA products, though use only one at a time (i.e. apply the 1% BHA lotion in the morning under makeup and the 1% BHA Gel in the evening).

Is Paula's Choice 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel stronger than the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion?
From a percentage of active ingredient standpoint, no. However, because the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel is some what better able to penetrate into the pore which can produce faster (but not necessarily better) results. The drawback with this enhanced penetration is that it may increase the likelihood of skin flaking or peeling for some people. The 1% BHA Lotion's base allows for slower, more controlled penetration of salicylic acid.

How does Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel compare to the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid?
The main difference is texture. The 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid has a toner-like consistency, and its base allows faster penetration of salicylic acid into the pore lining while providing ultra-light hydration.

The 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel has a water-light gel base that lightly hydrates without feeling thick or greasy. Both products contain the same concentration of salicylic acid and have a pH level low enough for effective exfoliation. Both products are also appropriate for all skin types, though those with oily to very oily skin may naturally prefer the 2% BHA Liquid's texture.

I currently use Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion. Should I switch to the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel? Is it all right to use both?
It is entirely a matter of personal preference. If you like the texture and finish of the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion and it worked for your skin, then stick with it. However, if you want a lighter texture or your skin has become oilier (such as can occur seasonally—think summer vs. winter skin) then you may consider the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel. It is completely acceptable to use more than one of our 2% BHA products, though use only one at a time. A typical regimen would be to apply the 2% BHA Gel in the morning under makeup and the 2% BHA Lotion in the evening.

Is Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel stronger than the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid?
No. Both products have the same concentration of salicylic acid formulated in the correct pH range for exfoliation to occur. Both products also have a glycol base courtesy of the ingredient methylpropanediol. This ingredient enhances the penetration of salicylic acid while also having water-binding properties for skin. Which product to choose comes down to whether you want a liquid (toner-like) or gel texture.

I have tried Paula's Choice 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion and 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid and did not care for the texture of either. Will the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Gel work for me?
Quite possibly, yes. If you're looking for a BHA exfoliant with a texture that's lighter than our 2% BHA Lotion but not as liquidy as our 2% BHA Liquid, the 2% BHA Gel should be an ideal "happy medium" for your skin.

Which BHA should I use?
Use the one that will produce the best results for your skin type. We recommend starting with a 1% BHA concentration before moving to a 2%, unless you have very oily skin and stubborn, persistent breakouts. For more information about exfoliants, read Paula's article Understanding Exfoliants.

I use one of your BHA products and have noticed some of my towels and/or pillowcases have become stained, almost as if they were bleached. Why does this happen?
When salicylic acid is formulated with a lower pH range (between 3-4), which is essential for it to work effectively as an exfoliant, there is a very small risk it may have a lightening effect on dyed natural fabrics such as cotton or linen in necklines of shirts or pillowcases. You can easily eliminate this potential problem by waiting for the BHA product to absorb and dry completely before coming into contact with such dyed fabrics.

Can I use both an AHA and a BHA?
You can use both, and some of our customers do and have great results using both, but generally using one or the other is far more typical. We do not recommend using both on the same parts of the face at the same time.

How soon can I expect to see results?
That truly depends on your skin type and how often you use the product. Results can appear as soon as 1 day after use but may take up to 1 week.

I have dry, sun damaged skin AND breakouts in my t-zone—which should I use, an AHA or BHA product?
AHA is better for exfoliating sun-damaged surface skin and BHA is better at getting into the pores and exfoliating the accumulated skin cells that clog pores as well as exfoliating the surface of skin. A BHA product would probably work best but you can also experiment to see which one works best for your skin type.

How often should exfoliants be used?
This really depends on your skin and how it reacts to an AHA or BHA product. Once per day may be best, or you may find greater results from using it twice per day. Those with sensitive skin may do best with applying it once every other day. It does not matter if these are used morning or evening—or both, that decision is just personal preference.

After I apply an exfoliant, do I have to wait before applying moisturizers?
No, our moisturizers can be applied to dry areas immediately afterwards.

What do I do when my skin "gets used to" my AHA/BHA?
Your skin doesn't "get used to" an AHA or BHA, but AHAs and BHA do have a drop-off point, because there is only so much surface exfoliation or exfoliation in the pore that can take place. The longer you use these products, the less "dramatic" the results will be. However, they will always be beneficial for maintaining smooth, even-textured skin and encouraging ongoing healthy cell turnover.

What will happen if I stop using exfoliants?
Your skin may retain some of the smoothness from the AHA/BHA treatment as they can generate collagen production, but as the sun-damaged skin cells or skin cells that grow abnormally collect once again, your skin will slowly revert to the way it was before you started using the products.

Can AHA or BHA be used around the eyes?
Do not apply the AHA or BHA products too close to the eyes or to the eyelid or underbrow areas. You may try a small amount in the general under-eye area (going no closer to the eye than the orbital bone) to see how your skin reacts. If your skin seems fine, then gently pat the AHA or BHA closer to the eye, making sure not to get it too close or in the eye.

Should I use an AHA on my face and neck?
You can and should use this on your neck or chest if that area is sun damaged.

Can BHA be used on teens and/or pre-teens?
Yes, this is fine and often beneficial for teens, especially those with acne or blackheads.

Can I use AHA and/or BHA products on areas other than my face?
Paula's Choice AHA and BHA products can be used anywhere on the body. They work very well to exfoliate dry elbows, knees, feet, and arms. However, if you prefer a product formulated specifically for the body, try our Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Weightless Body Treatment with 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid.

Can the AHA and/or BHA products be used during pregnancy or while lactating?
Although topical exfoliants should not pose a problem for pregnant woman, we do recommend asking your doctor before using or continuing to use an AHA or BHA product while pregnant or if you are lactating.

Do I have to use sunscreen if I am using an AHA or BHA product?
For the long-term health and appearance of your skin, you certainly should get in to the habit of applying sunscreen every day, rain or shine, especially when you are using an AHA or BHA product. Since these topical exfoliants work to remove layers of sun-damaged skin, it is vitally important that the fresh, new skin is well-protected from UV light. Ironically, the sun-damaged layer of skin (which the AHA or BHA products nicely remove) serves as your skin's first line of defense against sun exposure. Think of it as a callus that offers minimal protection while keeping your skin from looking and feeling its best.

How does using an AHA or BHA affect the results I get from using Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel?
There are pros and cons to combining any exfoliant (AHA or BHA exfoliant or topical scrub) with a self-tanner. Almost all self-tanners contain dihydroxyacetone (a derivative of sugar that turns skin cells a shade of brown), which affects only the uppermost layers of skin. Exfoliants affect these same layers and, as a result, the exfoliant sloughs off the skin cells affected by the self-tanner, thus reducing how long your "tan" lasts. That’s the negative. The positive is that when the skin is smoother (the benefit of using a well-formulated exfoliant) you get much more even-toned results from the self-tanner. Unless you're willing to not use an AHA or BHA product or a topical scrub when trying to obtain and maintain a self-tan, the only solution is to compromise. That may involve using the BHA or AHA lotion less often (such as two or three times per week rather than daily) or applying Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel more often to maintain the level of colour you like.

There is no question that smooth, exfoliated skin produces a more even "tan" from self-tanning products, but the irony is that these exfoliants hasten the departure of the tan, necessitating adjustments in your routine. With some experimentation, you should be able to use both products successfully. One last tip: even if other lotions are part of your regular routine, when self-tanning, the Almost the Real Thing Self Tanning Gel works best when applied to smooth, clean skin.

SPF 15 Sunscreens

What are the differences between the three SPF 15 Daytime Moisturizers?
Each of our SPF 15 sunscreens contain a combination of active ingredients that provides excellent UVA/UVB protection. The main difference between each formula is texture and how it feels on the skin and the skin type the formula is most suitable for.

Essential Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 15, for normal to oily/combination skin, contains a blend of sunscreens including avobenzone for sufficient UVA protection. Avobenzone is considered a better choice than titanium dioxide or zinc oxide for normal to oily skin that tends to break out. This sunscreen has a very light lotion texture that leaves normal to oily/combination skin smooth and protected without feeling slick or greasy.

Essential Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 15, for normal to dry skin, contains a blend of octinoxate and titanium dioxide for excellent UVA protection. Titanium Dioxide not only provides effective broad-spectrum sun protection, it is also non-sensitizing and works well for normal to dry skin that does not have a tendency to break out. Essential Moisturizing Sunscreen has a lotion texture that feels moist and creamy, perfect for normal to dry skin.

Pure Mineral Sunscreen SPF 15, for normal to very dry or sensitive skin, does not contain "chemical" sunscreens such as octinoxate, octisalate, or avobenzone. Although "chemical" sunscreens are effective and work beautifully for most skin types, they can be too irritating for sensitive skins, causing stinging or burning, especially when used around the eyes. Pure Mineral Sunscreen contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, inert minerals that are considered non-irritating and a great option for sensitive (but not breakout-prone) skin. Careful blending is required to smooth away the whitish cast of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide but Pure Mineral Sunscreen has a light, fluid texture that leaves skin feeling silky, soothed, and protected. It is also excellent for use on children and infants over six months of age.

Why does the Essential Non-Greasy Sunscreen leave a shine on my face?
This sunscreen contains avobenzone. Although avobenzone is less likely to clog your pores, it doesn't dry as matte as titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Unfortunately, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are more likely to clog pores. If this effect is bothersome, try experimenting with sunscreens that contain titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide to see how your skin responds.

Does avobenzone work as well as titanium dioxide?
Avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789 and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane) is capable of screening UVA radiation up to 400 nanometers, which is enough to protect skin from up to 98% of UVA rays. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide can screen up to 700 nanometers, but this amount of radiation does not affect us, so in the end, all three come out as equal.

In the U.S., only four sunscreen ingredients have been widely approved as effective against UVA radiation. They are titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789 and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane). The FDA approved Mexoryl SX (also called ecamsule) in July 2006 for use in one sunscreen product sold in the U.S., Anthelios SX SPF 15 by L'Oreal-owned La Roche-Posay. You only need to have one of these in the active ingredients list. Outside of the U.S., the UVA-protecting ingredients Mexoryl SX and Tinosorb (not approved in the U.S.) are often used. (For more information on sunscreens, please see Sun Essentials).

Why isn't there a moisturizing sunscreen with avobenzone?
Avobenzone is less pore clogging than titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, so we have included it in our Essential Non-Greasy Sunscreen SPF 15 for Normal to Oily/Combination Skin. However, some people do experience irritation from avobenzone, and that is why it is not included in our moisturizing sunscreens. You can also consider our Pure Mineral Sunscreen SPF 15 if other synthetic sunscreen agents like avobenzone have proven to be problematic.

I stay out of the sun. Do I still need to use sunscreen?
Yes. UVA rays can penetrate the windows in your office and car, so you should always wear at least an SPF 15 with titanium dixide, zinc oxide, or avobenzone as the active ingredients.

Will an SPF 15 give me enough protection?
Unless you are in full sun all day long, you should be fine with any Paula's Choice SPF 15 sunscreen. If you live in the southern half of the United States, or any other sunny climate, you might want to use an Extra Care SPF 30 sunscreen instead.

Can I use the SPF 15 sunscreens around my eyes?
Yes, but use caution, because anything used around the eyes can migrate into the eyes. Our Pure Mineral Sunscreen SPF 15 and foundations with sunscreen can be used around the eyes, or wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection.

Is it okay to use the SPF 15 sunscreens on babies and children?
Anytime you use an over-the-counter product on a baby or child you should get your doctor's approval. Many pediatricians recommend keeping infants under six months old out of the sun and making sure that their delicate skin is completely covered.

Are the SPF 15 sunscreens just for the face?
The sunscreens can be used on the face and all over the body.

Do I need to use another moisturizer or SPF product in conjunction with them?
No, but if your skin is extremely dry, you can use a moisturizer under the sunscreen.

What if I need to reapply sunscreen but do not want to disturb my foundation/makeup?
Try using a pressed powder that contains a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Our Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15 is an excellent option, or consider the powders with sunscreen from Stila and Pola.

Moisturizers

My skin is normal, without any really oily or dry areas. Do I need a moisturizer? If so, which one?
You may not actually need a moisturizer every day (see The Truth About Moisturizers and Dry Skin for more info), but if you prefer to use one, we recommend starting with our lightest formulas, Skin Balancing Moisture Gel or HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion. If you want more substantial moisturizing, try the Hydrating Treatment Cream. Also, if you don't want to use a moisturizer, but want the benefits of topically applied antioxidants, try our original Super Antioxidant Concentrate.

I have normal to oily skin with dry patches. What moisturizer should I use?
Both the HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel are excellent options. Each contains state-of-the-art ingredients that will smooth and soothe your dry or flaky areas and the main difference is texture and how they feel on the skin. HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion leaves a satiny finish, while Skin Balancing Moisture Gel's silicone base leaves a silky matte finish, and is a better choice if you need light moisturizing but don't want any after-feel. Both moisturizers work well under makeup. If the under eye area is dry consider a more emollient formula such as our Hydrating Treatment Cream or Skin Recovery Moisturizer.

If you are using anti-acne products (including Retin-A), your skin is oily to very oily skin and you are experiencing surface dryness, consider starting using the Skin Balancing Moisture Gel.

What is the difference between the HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel?
Each contains state-of-the-art ingredients that will smooth and soothe your dry or flaky areas and the main difference is texture and how they feel on the skin. HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion leaves a satiny finish, while Skin Balancing Moisture Gel's silicone base leaves a silky matte finish, and is a better choice if you need light moisturizing but don't want any after-feel.

I have mostly normal skin with dry areas, especially on my cheeks. Which moisturizer will work best for me?
We offer several options and it is really up to your personal preference for how the product feels and performs on your skin. A good place to start is with our Hydrating Treatment Cream. If your dry areas still do not improve, then you may want to try our Skin Recovery Moisturizer. It is OK to only put moisturizer on the dry areas and not your entire face. It is also helpful to use our Super Antioxidant Concentrate or Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate in combination with (on top of or underneath) any moisturizer you apply.

My skin is dry. Which moisturizer do you recommend?
Several Paula's Choice moisturizers would work well for you. Choosing the perfect moisturizer has a lot to do with your personal preference and trying a product to determine which one works best on your skin. A good place to start is with our Barrier Repair Replenishing Moisturizer, but if you want a richer texture, try our Hydrating Treatment Cream. Our most emollient moisturizer is the Skin Recovery Moisturizer. It is also helpful to use our Super Antioxidant Concentrate or Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate in combination with (on top of or underneath) any moisturizer you apply. You may also wish to treat your dry skin to frequent applications of our Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask.

I have very dry skin. Which moisturizer should I use?
Our Skin Recovery Moisturizer is designed for very dry skin and is gentle, very creamy, and rich. It is also helpful to use our Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate in combination with (on top of or underneath) any moisturizer you apply.

My skin is really sensitive. Do you have a moisturizer for me?
Since none of Paula's Choice Moisturizers contain fragrance, colouring agents, or sensitizing plant extracts, they are all extremely gentle options for your sensitive skin.

Do any of your moisturizers work as a night cream/eye cream? Why don't you offer a moisturizer made specifically for the eyes?
All Paula's Choice moisturizers are designed to be used around the eyes. Which one to use depends on your skin type. If you have oily or breakout-prone skin we recommend the HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion or Skin Balancing Moisture Gel. For dry skin, try the Barrier Repair Replenishing Moisturizer or Hydrating Treatment Cream, and for extra dry skin try the Skin Recovery Moisturizer.

Eye creams are a whim of the cosmetics industry designed to evoke the sale of two products when only one is needed. There is no evidence, research, or documentation validating the claim that eye creams have special formulations setting them apart from other facial moisturizers-the only difference is price and the tiny containers the eye creams come in. For more information, please see the article Are Eye Creams Necessary?

The Paula's Choice moisturizer I used to use no longer works for my skin. What do you recommend?
Skin type changes depending on many factors (climate, hormones, or medications, to name a few). See Understanding Why Skin Type Can Be So Complicated for more information. It is often necessary to change moisturizers seasonally. More emollient moisturizers like our Skin Recovery Moisturizer or Hydrating Treatment Cream can be helpful for winter, and lighter-weight products such as our Skin Balancing Moisture Gel or HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion may be more appropriate for your skin during the summer.

How is HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion different from the former Completely Non-Greasy Moisturizing Lotion?
The major differences are that HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion has a silkier feel, an even smoother application, and contains a greater array of antioxidants than Completely Non-Greasy Moisturizing Lotion. Texture- and finish-wise, the two moisturizers are quite similar, although improvements have been made to the HydraLight version. Users of Completely Non-Greasy Moisturizing Lotion will likely be impressed with the aesthetic improvements achieved with HydraLight Moisture-Infusing Lotion while their skin enjoys the benefits of additional antioxidants and anti-irritants.

How is Barrier Repair Replenishing Moisturizer different from the former Completely Emollient Moisturizer?
Barrier Repair Replenishing Moisturizer is a significant improvement over the recently discontinued Completely Emollient Moisturizer. Barrier Repair Replenishing Moisturizer is formulated for the same skin type (normal to dry), but it has more antioxidants, a greater range of emollients (including several ingredients that mimic the structure and function of healthy skin), and state-of-the-art water-binding agents. Its silky texture provides the moisture normal to dry skin needs without feeling thick, heavy, or occlusive. In addition, evening primrose oil (the main plant oil in this moisturizer) is not only an excellent source of skin-beneficial gamma linoleic acid, but it is also anti-inflammatory, which makes it a great option for those battling rosacea.

What is the difference between the new Skin Recovery Moisturizer and the original?
Paula's goal with this reformulation was to make a very good moisturizer even better. While this new version of Skin Recovery Moisturizer has similar moisturizing ability, texture and feeling on the skin, there were several critical state-of-the-art additions. Specifically, instead of sunflower oil, the new formula uses evening primrose oil, a beneficial source of the cell-communicating ingredients gamma linolenic acid, linolenic acid, and the antioxidant vitamin E. Other additions include a blend of efficacious peptides, a greater complement of antioxidants and anti-irritants, and other ingredients that more closely mimic the structure and function of healthy skin. The packaging is now less air-permeable, helping to keep the ingredients stable and effective, and she is very proud of what she and her team of chemists accomplished with this improved Skin Recovery Moisturizer.

I am having some difficulty dispensing the Skin Recovery Moisturizer from the bottle. What should I do?
We are aware of the difficulty dispensing this product and are in the process of updating to more user-friendly packaging. With the current packaging, it may take 15 to 20 pumps upon initial use to begin dispensing the moisturizer due to its thickness. With subsequent use, the amount of product dispensed may vary. Additionally, due to its thick consistency, the Skin Recovery Moisturizer may not fall to the bottom of the pump bottle when dispensed with daily use. The solution is to tap the bottom of the bottle on a hard surface (such as a countertop) to force the contents downward. The product will then dispense normally again. However, because of the unique hydrating properties of this state-of-the-art formula, you'll notice that a little Skin Recovery Moisturizer does go a long way.

How is Beautiful Body Butter different from Paula's Choice nighttime moisturizers?
Beautiful Body Butter is our thickest, richest, most emollient product and has a very different texture from our nighttime facial moisturizers. It is meant to provide the utmost protection and smoothing for dry to very dry areas such as hands, feet, elbows, and knees. Although our Skin Recovery Moisturizer and Hydrating Treatment Cream are also suitable options for areas of dry to very dry skin, Beautiful Body Butter was formulated to address the most troublesome aspects of these skin types, such as roughness, splitting, and cracking. In addition, although Beautiful Body Butter can be used on the face, its thick texture makes it preferred for use from the neck down. In contrast, our nighttime moisturizers were designed specifically for the face, but can also be used on the body.

What is the difference between Beautiful Body Butter and the Lip & Body Treatment Balm?
The primary difference is texture. The Beautiful Body Butter's soft, creamy texture is like dense whipped butter. The Lip & Body Treatment Balm is extremely thick with a rich, lubricating feel. In addition, the Beautiful Body Butter is water-based whereas the Lip & Body Treatment Balm is plant oil-based and waterless, giving it a more viscous, less absorbent quality. Both products are excellent for addressing the needs of dry to extremely dehydrated skin such as dry, cracked heels, ragged cuticles, rough elbows or knees,. Because Beautiful Body Butter has a lighter finish and is more easily absorbed, it is recommended for larger areas of dry skin or as a spot treatment. The Lip & Body Treatment Balm is best as a spot treatment or for chapped lips.

Blemish Fighting Solutions

What is the difference between the two Blemish Fighting Solutions?
The major difference is the amount of benzoyl peroxide each contains. The regular Blemish Fighting Solution contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, a good amount to start with for treating mild breakouts or for those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin. Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution contains 5% benzoyl peroxide, a more potent amount best for stubborn blemishes that have not responded favourably to lower strength disinfectants. Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution can be alternated with the regular Blemish Fighting Solution depending on your skin's needs and the severity of your blemishes.

Both Blemish Fighting Solutions are designed to feel light and fresh on the skin, leaving no residue. Each contains skin-soothing agents and dries down to a soft matte finish that will not interfere with makeup application.

How often should I use either Blemish Fighting Solution?
As often as needed. Some people use it two or three times a week and some use it twice a day. It really depends on your skin and how it responds to the product.

How long will it take to see a difference?
Once again, it really is different for everyone, but give it one month (or one menstrual cycle for women).

If I use the Blemish Fighting Solution more often will my acne go away faster?
Everyone has different skin, so results can differ from person to person. What will happen is that the benzoyl peroxide will help disinfect the area, killing the bacteria that cause pimples.

I use the Blemish Fighting Solution every day. Why do I still break out?
Not everyone responds the same to acne treatments. It often takes experimenting to find what works best for your skin type. While many people have great success with my blemish-fighting products, you might need to try prescription-only medications (please see our Battle Plan for Blemishes for more specifics).

After I apply the Beta Hydroxy Lotion or Liquid, do I immediately apply the Blemish Fighting Solution? Or do I wait a few minutes for the BHA to be absorbed and then apply the Blemish Fighting Solution to my dry (rather than moist) skin?
You can apply either Blemish Fighting Solution immediately after the BHA. Salicylic acid (BHA) has been found to start working quite quickly and may actually help the penetration of the benzoyl peroxide product.

If oxygen can cause free-radical damage to the skin, and benzoyl (and hydrogen) peroxide work by releasing an oxygen molecule to the skin, do benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide cause free-radical damage?
While they are both peroxides, current research indicates that benzoyl peroxide probably doesn't create the same (if any) oxidative issues as hydrogen peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide is also highly effective in reducing acne lesions. I do not recommend the use of hydrogen peroxide for acne because research shows it has cumulative damaging effects on the skin.

Are the Blemish Fighting Solutions only a spot treatment or for all over?
You can use it as either a spot treatment over breakouts and problem areas or all over.

Can my child or teenager use the Blemish Fighting Solutions?
Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solutions are excellent for teens because they are much gentler than almost any other topical antibacterial product on the market. Neither product contains alcohol, menthol, or other irritating ingredients. Instead, they contain anti-irritants that calm the redness and inflammation associated with breakouts. They should also be fine to use on children, but if your child is under 10 years old, we recommend that you consult your child's physician prior to use.

We recommend starting with the regular strength Blemish Fighting Solution that contains 2.5% benzoyl peroxide and is best for treating mild breakouts or for those with sensitive, blemish-prone skin. Stubborn blemishes that have not responded to lower strength disinfectants can be treated with Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution with 5% benzoyl peroxide.

However, as can happen with any skin care product, if irritation or a rash occurs, discontinue use immediately.

Masks

How often should I use a mask?
As often as needed. For very oily or very dry skins, this may mean every day. Experimentation will tell you the frequency of application that works best for your skin.

How long should I leave a Paula's Choice mask on?
The Skin Balancing Carbon Mask should be left on at least 5 minutes but can stay on longer (up to 20 minutes) if you have extremely oily skin. The Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask should also be left on at least 5 minutes but can stay on as long as overnight.

If I have dry skin, can I use the Skin Balancing Carbon Mask?
You can, but there is no need to remove dry skin's little natural oil. The mask's main benefit is for those with oily skin or oily areas. If you have combination skin (oily with dry areas) you can use this over the oily areas. Those with dry to very dry skin should consider the Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask.

How often should I use the Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask?
It can be used as often as needed; it depends on your skin type and personal preference. Those with normal skin can use this mask once per week or every other week as a "special treat" for their skin. Those with dry skin may want to use this mask more frequently, up to 2–3 times per week (including an overnight treatment one time per week). Someone with very dry, dehydrated skin should use this mask (or a very emollient moisturizer) once per day, morning or evening, until his or her dryness has improved. As a general rule, pay close attention to how your skin is behaving on a daily basis, and use Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask accordingly.

What is the difference between the Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask and Paula's moisturizers for normal to very dry skin? Can I use these moisturizers as moisturizing masks?
Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment mask has a thicker, creamier texture than Paula's Choice nighttime moisturizers. Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Moisturizer can also be used as moisturizing masks, but because Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask is meant to be used primarily as a mask (occasionally being left on the skin overnight if you prefer or if your skin needs it), it has a more slippery, emollient feel than these and most other moisturizers.

Lip Products

Which Lip Product is Right for Me?
Paula's Choice offers a variety of products for keeping lips in beautifully smooth, kissable condition. Our Exfoliating Treatment is an all-seasons solution for eliminating and preventing dry, chapped, flaky lips. It may be used morning and/or evening, as often as needed.

Sun protection is vital for healthy lips so we offer two state-of-the-art products to meet that need. Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15 is a portable, smooth-textured lip balm in stick form, and contains an in-part titanium dioxide sunscreen for sufficient UVA protection. Our Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15 shade Invisible is designed as a lighter, glossier option for keeping lips moist and shielded from the sun's rays. Its in-part avobenzone sunscreen ensures UVA protection.

For nighttime lip care, a Paula's Choice staff favorite is our Lip & Body Treatment Balm. This ultra-emollient product keeps lips smooth, soft, and protected from external causes of dryness such as indoor heat or low humidity. Lip & Body Treatment Balm may be used any time, but it should be followed with a product containing sunscreen if you'll be in daylight.

Can I use the Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15 at night?
Yes, although Paula's Choice Lip & Body Balm is a better option, as there is no need to wear sunscreen at night.

The Exfoliating Treatment hurts my lips. Why?
You may be rubbing too hard or simply using this too aggressively. Gently massage a small amount of product over dry lips and allow it to ball up and fall off, taking dry, dead skin flakes with it and leaving your once-chapped lips smooth and silky.

How often should I use the Exfoliating Treatment?
As often as needed.

Should/Can I use the Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15 under my lipstick?
If your lips feel or look dry prior to putting on lipstick, then yes you should.

Self-Tanning Gel

What is the colour range?
Light to medium, but the final colour depends on how the active ingredient (dihydroxyacetone) reacts with the protein in the top layers of your skin.

How long does the colour last?
That depends on how well it "takes" on your skin. Results often vary widely with the same self-tanner. On some the colour may last a week or more, while others find it lasts 2 days or fewer.

How often should I apply the Self-Tanning Gel?
That depends on how much colour you want. If your initial application was not dark enough for you, reapply the next day and keep reapplying until the desired depth of colour is achieved. Then, reapply every 2–3 days to maintain your tan.

Is this ok to use on your face? Even if you have oily/combination skin?
Yes, this product is well-suited for the face, even if you have very oily skin. The light gel formula is quickly absorbed and not at all greasy.

How do I exfoliate my body?
Use a body scrub, a washcloth or synthetic bath sponge, or mix baking soda and your body wash to form a thin, paste-like consistency. For stubborn areas (knees, heels, elbows), exfoliate the skin while dry, then wet skin to rinse.

Do I have to exfoliate every time?
We recommend this for best results, but it is not required.

I made a mistake. How can I remove it and start over?
Use Paula's Choice 2% BHA Acid Liquid – the self-tanner will come off right before your eyes!

Does it smell?
Dihydroxyacetone has a characteristic sweet odour. Some people do not mind or notice this, while others do. In almost all cases, the natural scent of dihydroxyacetone fades in less than a day.

If I apply this and lay out in the sun, will I get darker?
No, although if you tan naturally you will look darker. Self-tanners are not to be confused with tanning accelerators – which Paula does not recommend. Further, any amount of sun tanning is harmful for skin. Paula's Choice Almost the Real Thing Self-Tanning Gel does not offer any sun protection, so you must continue to use sunscreen if you will be outdoors or exposed to UV light.

Skin Lighteners (Only Available in the US at www.paulaschoice.com )

What is the difference between the Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel and the Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion?
The main differences are texture (gel vs. lotion) and the type of exfoliant included in the formula. Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel was designed with normal to oily skin in mind, so it contains salicylic acid (BHA) because those with normal to oily skin tend to break out and BHA is the preferred exfoliant when blemishes are a concern. Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion contains glycolic acid, which is ideal for someone with normal to dry skin that has visible sun damage (including sun-induced discolorations) and is not prone to breakouts.

Why did Paula use salicylic acid (BHA) in the Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel instead of the glycolic acid (AHA) used in her Skin Lightening Lotion?
Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel was designed with normal to oily skin in mind, so Paula chose to use BHA because it is oil soluble and can effectively penetrate further into the pore to loosen debris and help shed trapped dead skin cells. People with normal to oily skin also tend to have blackheads and blemishes and BHA is the preferred exfoliant when blemishes are a concern. Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel is ideal for someone with normal to oily (including very oily) skin who is struggling with persistent breakouts and sun- or hormone-induced discolorations. Paula's Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion with glycolic acid is meant for all skin types, but is ideal for those with normal to dry skin and visible sun damage, including sun-induced discolorations.

I currently use Paula's Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion. Should I switch to the Skin Lightening Gel?
If you have been using Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion with good results and enjoy the product's texture and application, there is no reason to switch to Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel. However, if you find the Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion is too thick or creamy, or if the combination of hydroquinone and glycolic acid is causing problems (such as stinging or prolonged redness) it would be appropriate to try Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel and see how your skin responds.

Can I use an AHA or BHA in combination with either one of the skin lighteners?
Using an additional exfoliant may not be necessary with either skin lightening product, because both Paula's Choice skin lightening products already contain them. We generally do not recommend using both an exfoliant and skin lightener at the same time. However, if you prefer, you can alternate use of an AHA or BHA with either product (i.e. using the Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion in the morning and the 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Solution in the evening or using the 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion in the morning and the Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel in the evening, etc.).

How long before I see a difference?
Results become noticeable after 2–3 months of consistent use, provided you are diligent about protecting your skin with an effective sunscreen every day.

Do the skin lighteners work on acne scars?
No. Acne scars are not related to melanin (the skin's pigment) and that is what the active ingredient (hydroquinone) in these products acts upon. Acne scars (which are usually red marks) are a result of your skin's healing response to blemishes, and are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Although these spots tend to fade on their own, it can take a year or more for them to completely vanish. A dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon can use specialized laser treatments to remove the red marks within 1-3 sessions.

I don't notice a difference in my skin colour. What's wrong?
You may not have used the lotion or gel long enough (2–3 months of consistent use is recommended before results are seen) or you did not protect your skin with an effective sunscreen every day. It is also possible that 2% hydroquinone is not potent enough for you. A physician can prescribe stronger hydroquinone products.

How often should I use these products?
At least once per day, and preferably twice per day.

Do I have to use them two times a day?
No, but we do recommend this for best results.

Do I have to continue using one of these products for the rest of my life? Can I stop once the darkened areas are lightened or gone?
To maintain results you do need to continue using a skin lightening product, though you may be able to decrease frequency of application. Keep in mind that skin lighteners will not work unless combined with the use of an effective sunscreen.

Do I put these just on the spots or all over?
Either method is fine.

Will these lighten my whole face?
No. Although keep in mind that for some darker skin tones products containing hydroquinone may have an opposite effect and cause areas of skin to become darkened.

Will the spots eventually come back?
They will come back if you do not practice sun avoidance and sun protection and regularly use a skin lightener.

My skin lightener is turning brown. Is it still effective?
After detailed correspondence with the cosmetics chemists I work with, they have informed me that while hydroquinone, the active ingredient in my Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion, and Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel may turn a tan to light brown colour once it is opened and exposed to light and/or air, this colour change does not affect the ability to fade skin discolorations.

The opaque tube packaging reduces the amount of light and air that comes in contact with the products but is not 100% airtight, which explains why these products may still change colour over time. You may continue to use them and they will still effectively fade skin discolorations.

Why is the Food and Drug Administration considering making hydroquinone products available by prescription only?
In September 2006, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that products containing hydroquinone be sold only with a prescription due to their opinion that it poses certain health risks. There are some animal studies showing it may be a possible carcinogen, and studies from Africa have shown a risk of a skin disorder called ochronosis (Source: http://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKETS/98fr/E6-14263.htm).

More than 200 products containing hydroquinone are currently sold in the United States, and, according to Dr. Susan Taylor, founding director of the Skin of Colour Center in New York City and assistant professor of dermatology at Columbia University, "Hydroquinone is the gold standard for treating pigmentation disorders and has been for many years. Paula considers it to be very safe and effective" (Source: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Wednesday, September 6, 2006).

Paula has researched the cosmetics industry for years and also sells skin-care products containing hydroquinone, and she believes this proposed ban on hydroquinone does not make sense. She bases that statement on abundant research from reputable sources that shows hydroquinone to be safe and extremely effective (Sources: Cutis, August 2006, Supplemental pages 6–19; Journal of Cosmetic Laser Therapy, September 2006, pages 121–127; American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, July 2006, pages 223–230; and Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, May 2006, Supplemental, pages 272–281). Surprisingly, there is even research showing that workers who handle pure hydroquinone actually have lower incidences of cancer than the population as a whole (Source: Critical Reviews in Toxicology, May 1999, pages 283–330). Research to the contrary was done either using products contaminated with other ingredients or was performed on mice using high concentrations of hydroquinone—and that doesn’t equate to the levels of hydroquinone used in topical, over-the-counter skin-care products. Further evidence that this proposed ban doesn’t make sense comes from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), who doesn’t agree with the FDA’s proposal—yet the AAD stands to gain the most if consumers can only obtain hydroquinone products with a dermatologist’s prescription.

The negative research about hydroquinone and the frightening assertions being levied in the media are not related to how this effective ingredient is used in skin-care products sold in the United States. It has been, and still is, the most effective topical agent for fading and/or eliminating sun- or hormone-induced brown skin discolorations.

Hair Care

What hair type was All Over Hair & Body Shampoo designed for?
It is designed for use by all hair types, including fine or thin.

Will All Over Hair & Body Shampoo cause buildup?
No. This shampoo does not contain film-forming agents or a high level of conditioning agents so there are no ingredients to build-up on the hair shaft. The shampoo rinses easily and completely.

Does All Over Hair & Body Shampoo lather?
Yes, although the lather itself is more for consumer impression and expectation than product performance. The lather itself does not have any cleansing ability.

Can I use this shampoo if I colour-treat or perm/relax my hair?
Yes. All Over Hair & Body Shampoo is exceptionally gentle and will not strip hair-colour or make chemically treated hair feel dry or straw-like.

I have a sensitive scalp. Can I use this shampoo?
Yes! Because we have avoided using any fragrance, colouring agents, or irritants such as citrus or peppermint, you should be able to use All Over Hair & Body Shampoo without incident.

Can I use All Over Hair & Body Shampoo to wash my infant and/or child?
Yes, although as a general rule we always recommend asking your pediatrician before using any new product on an infant or child's skin. Paula's Choice All Over Hair & Body Shampoo is very gentle, and the fact that it is fragrance-free makes it a safer bet than most baby shampoos.

Can I use All Over Hair & Body Shampoo to wash my dog?
Yes, that is perfectly fine. Always be sure to rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove all traces of shampoo from your dog's coat.

What hair type was Smooth Finish Conditioner designed for?
It is designed for use by all hair types, including fine or thin. Keep in mind that the finer your hair texture is, the less conditioner you should use. The same principle hold true for persons with oily scalps, who should only condition the ends of the hair and not the roots.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner to shave my legs?
Yes, although we recommend using our Close Comfort Shave Gel for best results. Smooth Finish Conditioner is an option, but does not rinse as well as Close Comfort Shave Gel.]

How often should I use Smooth Finish Conditioner?
As often as you like! If you have dry or chemically treated hair, we recommend using it after every shampoo.

How long should I leave Smooth Finish Conditioner on my hair before rinsing it?
If you have normal to fine hair, 1--3 minutes is ideal. Thicker, coarse, or hair past shoulder length should leave it on for at least five minutes, preferably longer.

How much Smooth Finish Conditioner should I use per application?
That all depends on your hair length and texture. If you have short hair that is fine or thin, an amount less than the size of a dime should be plenty. Normal hair (not fine or thin but not thick or coarse) should use a nickel-sized amount. Thick, coarse, or curly hair that is also long should use a quarter-size amount or more. Experimentation will tell you which amount is best for your hair's texture and condition.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner as a deep conditioner?
Yes. Simply wash hair, towel dry, and apply a generous amount, working through hair with a comb. Leave on overnight or for several hours and rinse, then style as usual.

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner as a leave-in conditioner?
Yes, although we recommend using a very small amount (pea-sized) mixed with a styling product (such as gel or mousse) for extra smoothing and softness.

Body Products

Beautiful Body Butter

The Beautiful Body Butter's soft, creamy texture is like whipped butter.

Slip Into Silk Body Lotion

How does Slip Into Silk Body Lotion differ from the Paula's Choice nighttime moisturizers?
We combined the skin-beneficial elements of all our nighttime moisturizers to create a multi-purpose, all-over body lotion that gives all skin types what they need to look healthy and radiant and feel soft and remarkably smooth. Each Paula's Choice nighttime moisturizer has its own distinctive texture. There are multiple options so customers can choose the moisturizer that best suits their personal texture preference, fits their facial skin type/condition, and works well with their makeup.

I have very dry skin in some areas. Is Slip Into Silk Body Lotion emollient enough for me?
Probably not. For very dry or cracked skin (such as elbows, knees, and heels), we recommend using Beautiful Body Butter, which is considerably more emollient than Slip Into Silk Body Lotion. Slip Into Silk Body Lotion works well as an all-over moisturizer for smoothing and protecting dry skin, while Beautiful Body Butter is our thickest, richest, most emollient product and is meant to provide the utmost protection and smoothing for dry to very dry areas such as hands, feet, elbows, and knees.

Is it OK to use Retin-A or Renova with Slip Into Silk Body Lotion?
Yes, this should be fine. However, we always recommend checking with your physician before use with any prescription medications.

Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA

What is the difference between the Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA and the 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Solution? Do I need both?
The two major differences are texture and glycolic acid concentration. The Skin Revealing Body Lotion contains 10% AHA in a creamy, moisturizing base while the 8% AHA Solution has a gel base. Another difference is pH. The 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Solution has a pH of 3.5 while the Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA has a slightly more acidic pH value of 3. The lotion's lower pH offers slightly enhanced exfoliation to dry, thickened, or uneven body skin.

Can I use the Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA on my face?
It depends. If you have used AHA products on your face before with success, you should be able to use the Skin Revealing Body Lotion too. However, if you are new to using AHAs or have previously used lower concentrations (5% and below) you should work up to a 10% concentration gradually. We suggest starting with our 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Solution and monitoring how your skin responds.

Is it OK to use Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA while using Retin-A or Renova?
It is always best to consult with your physician regarding products to use with prescription medications. Some physicians/dermatologists advise against using glycolic acid while using tretinoin due to the potential for increased irritation and topical side effects (such as stinging or flaky skin) while other doctors believe that an AHA product enhances penetration of the tretinoin into the skin and provides other benefits as well. Upon the advice of your physician, you can experiment with both options to see which one works best for you.

You may apply the tretinoin product in the evening and apply the Skin Revealing Body Lotion as part of your morning routine, followed by an effective sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher. You may also apply both at the same time, starting with the AHA and then applying the tretinoin product. If you experience increased redness, prolonged stinging, or flaking skin, discontinue using Skin Revealing Body Moisturizer over areas where tretinoin is also applied.

Can I use AHA and/or BHA products on areas other than my face?
Paula's Choice AHA and BHA products can be used anywhere on the body, or, if preferred, you may choose our AHA and BHA body lotions for use on the face and body. All of our AHA and BHA products work very well to exfoliate dry elbows, knees, feet, and arms. However, Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% AHA and Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA are formulated at pH levels that permit enhanced exfoliation of body skin. Because skin from the neck down is often less sensitive and tends towards calluses in areas, this enhanced exfoliation helps to more quickly remedy dry, thickened, skin.

Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA

How does Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA differ from the other Paula's Choice BHA products?
The primary differences are texture and pH level. The lotion base of Weightless Body Treatment is significantly less emollient than our 2% BHA Lotion and entirely different from our 2% BHA Liquid (which has a toner-like texture).

Can I use Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA on my face?
Yes. In fact, some skin types may prefer the texture of Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA for facial use. If you have normal to slightly dry or slightly oily skin and our 2% BHA Liquid or 2% BHA Lotion were not right for you, the Weightless Body Treatment would be a great compromise.

Is it OK to use Retin-A or Renova with Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA?
It is always best to consult with your physician regarding prescription medications. Few physicians/dermatologists recommend using Renova/Retin-A along with a salicylic acid product due to increased risk of side effects associated with tretinoin therapy. However, with your physician's OK, you may certainly experiment with using them at the same time or separately depending on how your skin responds. It is always essential to use an effective sunscreen rated at SPF 15 or higher. If you experience increased redness, sensitivity, or flaking skin, discontinue using the Weightless Body Treatment with 2% BHA over areas where tretinoin is also applied.

Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray

I have dry and very dry areas of skin. Will Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray provide enough moisture?
Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray can be used for smoothing and silky light hydration, but if you have very dry skin, you will want to combine Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray with an emollient cream moisturizer such as our Beautiful Body Butter. This combination can be especially helpful for very dry skin. Apply Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray after your moisturizer to help seal in emollients.

Do I apply Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray before or after using an AHA or BHA product? What about Blemish Fighting Solutions?
Apply Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray after using any Paula's Choice exfoliant or Blemish Fighting Solution, and only to areas where skin is dry. The plant oils in Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray have the potential to exacerbate blemishes.

Why does the Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray have a distinctive scent?
Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray contains pure vanilla, which, like any cosmetic ingredient, has its own scent. Real vanilla was not added to this product as a fragrance, but for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Of course, because natural vanilla has a distinctive and appealing aroma, a nice side effect is that it can help make the other ingredients smell better. The vanilla plant (not synthetic vanilla, often called vanillin) is a source of catechins (also known as polyphenols), which exhibit antioxidant activity and serve as anti-inflammatory agents (Source: Drugs Experimental Clinical Research, 2004; 30(1):1-10).

Silky Start Sugar Scrub

Why does Paula's Choice Silky Start Sugar Scrub contain sugar rather than salt as the exfoliating agent?
Paula decided to use sugar rather than salt for several reasons. Salt is far more abrasive on skin and can also be irritating, especially if you have any nicks or cuts (such as can occur while shaving). The expression "rubbing salt on a wound" applies here, because the experience is painful. In addition, although salt is water-soluble, it does not dissolve as quickly as sugar, thus increasing the chance that consumers will use a salt scrub too aggressively. Lastly, sugar has natural water-binding properties for skin, a positive quality salt definitely lacks.

If I am already using an exfoliant on my body, can I use Silky Start Sugar Scrub too?
You can, just be sure to use the scrub gently and discontinue use (or use less often) if signs of irritation develop.

I have (or tend to get) breakouts on my chest and back. Is it OK to use Silky Start Sugar Scrub over those areas?
Due to the emollient and plant oil ingredients in Silky Start Sugar Body Scrub, we do not recommend using it over blemished skin or blemish-prone areas. However, even those with breakouts below the neck tend to experience bouts of dry skin on their arms and legs, and Silky Start Sugar Body Scrub can be used over these areas, and it's perfect for dry skin on the hands and feet!

How often should I use Silky Start Sugar Scrub?
You may use it as often as needed, and it is most convenient to use while showering. You may also want to keep a jar near your bathroom or kitchen sink to exfoliate dry, rough hands.

All-Over Hair & Body Shampoo

Smooth Finish Conditioner

Can I use Smooth Finish Conditioner to shave my legs?
Yes, although we recommend using our Close Comfort Shave Gel for best results. Smooth Finish Conditioner is an option, but does not rinse as well as Close Comfort Shave Gel.

Body Care Step-by-Step

Use the following Step-by-Step guide for applying your Paula's Choice body-care products.

Step 1: CLEAN (a.m. or p.m.)
Wash your body using a gentle body wash or shampoo, such as Paula's Choice All Over Hair & Body Shampoo.
Wet skin with warm water. Smooth shampoo over skin to create a lather. Rinse well.

Step 2: SHAVE and/or SCRUB (a.m. or p.m.)
When shaving your legs and/or underarms, use our gentle, non-irritating Close Comfort Shave Gel followed by our soothing Skin Relief Treatment, which reduces the inflammation and red bumps commonly associated with shaving. You can also use our Silky Start Sugar Scrub (coming November 2004) as the second step in your routine for an extra smooth feel (either on days you aren't shaving, or after shaving). Paula loves using the Sugar Scrub after shaving for extra silky-smooth legs! Paula does not recommend using a salt scrub or another potentially irritating scrib in combination with shaving, but sugar scrubs are much gentler on the skin.

PAULA'S CHOICE CLOSE COMFORT SHAVE GEL
Apply to damp skin and shave, rinsing the blade between strokes. This gel formula does not foam or lather. Rinse or splash shave gel from skin after shaving.

PAULA'S CHOICE SKIN RELIEF TREATMENT
Apply to dry skin after shaving or hair removal. Saturate a cotton ball or pad and gently stroke over affected areas (can also be used with a Spray Pump if you prefer to mist it on). Do not rinse off. Can also be used prior to spa treatments, waxing, or electrolysis as a preventive measure. Do not use if you are allergic to aspirin or its derivatives.

PAULA'S CHOICE SILKY START SUGAR SCRUB
Wet skin with warm water. Spread a quarter-sized amount over areas you would like to scrub and gently massage over skin for about 30 seconds and then rinse. Works beautifully on legs, arms, feet, elbows, and knees.

Step 3: EXFOLIATE (a.m. and/or p.m.)
Apply either Paula's Choice Skin Revealing Body Lotion with 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acid or Weightless Body Treatment with 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid. You may prefer using a combination of these products depending on your skin's condition and personal preferences. For example, you may want to use the 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) product in the morning and the 10% Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) product in the evening but it is NOT advised to layer the two products on one another (too much exfoliation can be irritating to the skin). Generally, AHA is best on dry areas and the BHA is best over blemished, blackhead-prone areas, or callused areas of the body such as elbows, heels, or knees. These exfoliants may also be used on all areas of the body that need exfoliation, including the chest, neck, back, thighs, or buttocks. You may also want to try our unique Exfoliating Treatment to quickly remove dry, flaky skin using a light rubbing motion. This works especially well on particularly rough areas such as heels, knees, and elbows.

PAULA'S CHOICE SKIN REVEALING BODY LOTION WITH 10% ALPHA HYDROXY ACID
All skin types; Works especially well on dry, sun-damaged skin
Dispense a small amount into the palm of your hand and massage onto clean skin in gentle circular motions. May be used daily for all-over smoothing and exfoliation, or applied only to dry areas as often as needed. If using with an additional moisturizer, apply this treatment first. For daytime use, on parts of the body exposed to the sun, wear under a Paula's Choice sunscreen. Do not apply to just-shaved legs (AHAs can sting if applied directly after shaving). May be used on the face, but avoid the immediate eye area.

PAULA'S CHOICE WEIGHTLESS BODY TREATMENT WITH 2% BETA HYDROXY ACID
All skin types; Works especially well on oily or combination skin prone to breakouts or on callused heels, knees, or elbows.
Dispense a small amount into the palm of your hand and apply to clean skin. May be used daily for all-over smoothing and exfoliation, or applied to blemished areas as needed. When treating blemishes, follow with Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solution or Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution but be aware that if benzoyl peroxide comes in contact with clothing staining or fading can occur. For daytime use, wear under a Paula's Choice sunscreen. Avoid direct contact with eyes.

If dryness or irritation appears, decrease use to every other day or just a couple of times a week (for AHA or BHA). If that doesn't resolve the problem, discontinue use.

Step 4: SPECIALTY TREATMENTS (a.m. and/or p.m.)

BLEMISH FIGHTING
If you are prone to breakouts on your body, Paula's Choice Blemish Fighting Solution or Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution is your next step (if needed) after applying AHA or BHA. Start with the regular strength product, but the Extra Strength Blemish Fighting Solution may be a better option for stubborn breakouts.
Use a cotton ball or fingertips to apply a thin layer to areas that tend to break out. Avoid contact with clothing because benzoyl peroxide lightens hair and fabric. Depending on skin type, apply once or twice daily. If dryness or irritation occurs, reduce use to once every other day or use as a spot treatment only. Do not use for breakouts on the scalp.

SKIN LIGHTENER (Only Available in the US at www.paulaschoice.com )
If you have patches or brown discolouration known as chloasma or melasma Paula's Choice Remarkable Skin Lightening Lotion and Clearly Remarkable Skin Lightening Gel can be applied after Step 3. Both these products contain either AHA or BHA so an additional AHA or BHA (see Step 3) may not be necessary, however, alternating use of an AHA or BHA with the Skin Lightening Lotion (using one in the morning and one in the evening) is an option.
Use fingertips to apply a thin layer over areas you wish to lighten. This product can be used once or twice daily. Results should appear after 8-12 weeks of regular use when combined with an effective sunscreen.

Step 5: MOISTURIZE (a.m and/or p.m.)
In the morning (under your sunscreen or on parts of the body not exposed to the sun) or at night after all other body care products are applied, you may use Paula's Choice Slip Into Silk Body Lotion, Silk Mist Dry Oil Spray, or Beautiful Body Butter, depending on your skin type. If you apply Slip Into Silk Body Lotion during the day, make sure to apply a well-formulated broad-spectrum sunscreen afterward (sunscreen should always be your last skin care step).

Paula's Choice body care moisturizers may be used together, or choose the one with the texture (liquid, lotion, or cream) you prefer.

SLIP INTO SILK BODY LOTION
All skin types
Apply to dry skin as often as needed. Dispense a small amount and massage into skin using gentle circular motions, using more in drier areas. Works especially well when used post-bath or shower when skin is still slightly damp. May be used over an AHA or BHA product. For daytime use, wear with a Paula's Choice sunscreen (applied after Slip Into Silk Body Lotion).

SILK MIST DRY OIL SPRAY
All skin types
Can be used alone or applied over an AHA or BHA product and/or Slip Into Silk Body Lotion. Hold bottle 6-8 inches from skin and lightly mist from the neck down, or just over areas where skin is dry. Massage into skin and let dry naturally. To avoid slipping, do not spray the soles of your feet and avoid getting mist on the floor. Do not use while standing in the shower/bathtub because the product can make some floor surfaces very slick.

BEAUTIFUL BODY BUTTER
Dry to very dry skin
Massage over dry areas as often as needed. Can be used after applying an AHA or BHA product. For daytime use, follow with the appropriate Paula's Choice sunscreen.

Step 6: PROTECT (a.m.)
Your final daytime body care step after all other products are applied is to protect your skin with the Paula's Choice Sunscreen SPF 15. Use on areas that will be exposed to the sun, every day of the year.

For any sunscreen to be effective it must be applied liberally to your face, neck, arms, backs of hands, and any other areas that are exposed to the sun. Always apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going outside and reapply after sweating, swimming, or washing hands.

Pumps/Spray Pumps

Do pumps and spray pumps come with the products?
Pumps and spray pumps are sold separately for those who prefer them. The products can be easily used without them.

What makes the Paula's Choice pump unique?
One great feature of our pump is that it "locks" with a simple twist which stops the flow of product. This minimizes waste by making it impossible to press down the dispenser so your product will not spill during travel or accidental pressure. To use this feature, simply click the white top portion of the pump clockwise. To open the "lock," turn the top of the pump counter-clockwise in the direction that is shown on the top.

My pump is too long for the bottle. Can I trim it?
Yes, you can cut off the bottom with scissors so that it is short enough to fit the bottle (be careful of the trimmed piece flying in an unexpected direction when cut). Make sure to leave it long enough to touch the bottom (or almost the bottom) of the bottle. This can be done for both the 8 oz full-size and 2 oz travel-size products. Please Note: Pumps and spray pumps work only with bottles, and not tubes. We do not recommend using the pump with Paula's Choice Oil-Absorbing Facial Mask, because of this product's unique texture.

My pump is clogged. What should I do?
To keep your pump or spray pump from clogging, occasionally remove it and pump through warm water.

Makeup - General

Do your makeup colours (foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc.) look exactly like they appear in your catalogue and on your Web site?
We make every effort to represent Paula's Choice makeup colours as accurately as we can. However, there are some variances in how colours are displayed in computer monitors and how they look in print, resulting in slight differences from how the actual colours appear. Furthermore, how colour "reads" on your skin and personal preference also influence the way any given shade of makeup will be perceived.

Paula's Choice offers samples of many of our makeup colours in limited supply. If you are unsure which shade would be best for you, please request samples so you may try the colour and examine it in natural light before purchasing the full size.

Also, please keep in mind that Paula's Choice stands behind every product with our 100% guarantee, so if you purchase a shade that does not work for you, please return it to us within 60 days from the date of purchase and we will be happy to provide a refund or exchange (minus the cost of shipping).

What is 100% Colour Confidence?
"100% Colour Confidence" is the Paula's Choice guarantee that you can shop with certainty for makeup colours on our site. Computer monitors tend to display colours differently, but if you order a colour and find it does not suit you, simply return it within 60 days and we will refund you the full purchase price (not including shipping) or provide a replacement, whichever you prefer.

Please contact Customer Service with questions about specific colours and we will respond as quickly as possible with additional information. You may also want to read our FAQs or view our "Choosing Colours" articles for additional assistance.

How do I know if a particular shade of Paula's Choice makeup is a warm or a cool tone?
All of our foundations, concealers, and powders fall into the neutral side of the colour spectrum, meaning they have elements of warm and cool tones to create a skin-true shade. These shades of foundation, concealer, or powder will help create an even skin tone.

Paula's Choice Soft Matte Blush and Lipsticks are divided into colour families:
        Pink/Rose/Mauve/Plum group represents cool tones
Soft Coral/Apricot/Tan group represents warm tones.

Paula's Choice Soft Matte Eyeshadow is divided into colour families:
Nudes/Neutrals are neutral shades, and can be worn with any colour combination.
        Classic Browns are warmer tones
        Taupes/Grays are cool tones
        Mauves/Plums are cool tones

Paula's Choice Eyeshadow Trios:
Next to Naked and Beautiful Basics are warm tones
Urban Chic, Flirty Amethyst, Lavender Whisper, and Moonlight Mist are cool tones.

Paula's Choice Soft Shine Moisturizing Lip Gloss are mostly cool shades except for Pebble, and Russet which are warm. Almost Clear and Blush are considered neutral.

Paula's Choice Long-Lasting Anti-Feather Lipliner:
Cool-toned liners are: Iced Berry, Delicate Plum, Cherry Spice, Plumwood, Merlot,
         Currant, Petal, and Carnation.
Warm-toned liners are: Mocha, Toffee, Ginger, Wine Spice, and Brick.
        Neutral-toned liner is: Lip Blush
        No Colour: Clear

EVENING GLOW

Sheer Shimmer Illuminating Liquid
        Glistening Opal is cool
        Glistening Bronze is warm

Crushed Diamonds Sparkling Loose Powder
        Gossamer Glow is cool
        Bronze Glow is warm

Liquid Diamonds High Shine Lip Gloss
        Sparkle is cool
        Dazzle is warm

Should I choose makeup shades based on my hair colour?
No. This is too limiting and a person's hair colour generally has little to do with what makeup shades will work best for them. Even redheads can escape from the coral, orange, or peachy colours and look beautiful in other colour tones. Exceptions to this occur when a person has a more extreme dyed hair colour, such as burgundy or blue-black. In those cases, it helps to choose makeup colours in the same tonal family as the hair colour. For example, someone who dyes their hair a rich burgundy shade should stick with cool (pink, rose, or plum-toned) blush and lipsticks shades. Someone who dyes their hair a blue-black may want to balance this intense colour with striking red lipstick or a more vibrant blush.

Cosmetics and skin-care products that have been improperly stored—for example, exposed to sunlight, left open, contaminated (any product packaged in a jar has almost a 100% risk of being contaminated)—may deteriorate substantially within one year.

We recommend discarding Paula's Choice cleansers, moisturizers, exfoliants, and foundations after one to two years of use.

I have Celiac disease. Which Paula's Choice products contain the wheat or gluten ingredients I should avoid?
The majority of Paula's Choice products are gluten-free; however, a list of products that do contain wheat and/or oat ingredients is below. Please keep in mind that we always advise you to consult with your physician if there is any doubt about using a cosmetic product that contains gluten ingredients. Some people with Celiac disease can tolerate a mild amount (which would be the case with cosmetics) and topical exposure is obviously different from ingesting gluten in foods such as bread or pasta.

  • Lip & Body Treatment Balm, Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, and Skin Balancing Moisture Gel all contain wheat germ oil.
  • All Over Hair & Body Shampoo and Hydrating Treatment Cream contain wheat protein.
  • Beautiful Body Butter, Oil-Absorbing Facial Mask, and Silky Start Sugar Scrub contain either oat kernel extract or oat flour (keep in mind that research has shown most Celiacs can tolerate oats in any form).
  • Smooth Finish Conditioner contains wheat amino acids.
  • Brow/Hair Tint contains wheat protein and oligosacharrides.
  • Extra Care Non-Greasy SPF 30 Sunscreen and Super Antioxidant Concentrate both contain oat beta-glucan, which is a type of yeast derived from oats. Note: this may be OK for Celiacs—please check with your doctor.

Concealer

Which Paula's Choice concealer colour should I choose?
Choose a shade that is one to one-and-a-half shades lighter than your foundation. If you do not use foundation (or if you use a sheer pressed powder instead of foundation), choose a shade that matches your skin tone as closely as possible. For help determining which Paula's Choice concealer colours will look best on you, please see the concealer section of our Choosing the Right Paula's Choice Face Makeup for Your Skin Tone chart.

What is the difference between the Soft Cream Concealer and the No Slip Concealer? The two Paula's Choice concealers have completely different formulas, textures, and finishes. Soft Cream Concealer is a smooth, creamy formula that glides over the skin and sets to a satin finish. In contrast, No Slip Concealer has a liquid texture, requires slightly more blending, and sets quickly to a matte finish. Both come in neutral shades that coordinate with a variety of skin tones, provide medium to full coverage, and can be layered when additional coverage is needed.

Which Paula's Choice concealer should I use to cover blemishes?
The No Slip Concealer's formula and matte finish is preferred for use over blemishes. It is extremely unlikely that it will clog pores or exacerbate blemishes.

Foundation

Which Paula's Choice foundation colour should I choose?
Foundation colour should match your skin exactly. For help determining which Paula's Choice foundation colours will look best on you, please see the foundation section of our Choosing the Right Paula's Choice Face Makeup for Your Skin Tone chart. However, the only way to know for sure is to try the product on your skin and check the colour in daylight. This chart or our customer service department (800.831.4088) should help you to narrow down options to two potential shades, but the final test must be done on your own skin. That is why you can purchase samples of each shade and we encourage you to use this option. However, keep in mind that our 100% Colour Confidence Guarantee ensures that you can always return the product within 60 days of purchase if you aren't completely satisfied.

If my foundation shade does not match exactly, should I choose the next lighter or darker shade?
If your foundation shade does not match your skin, it is not the foundation for you. If you like the texture of the foundation on your skin, you can always buy the next shade and mix the two together or the new shade may be the right one and you can return the other. Paula's Choice offers samples of each shade of every foundation we sell. If you are unsure which shade would be best for you, please request samples (for a minimal fee) so you may try the colour and examine it in natural light before purchasing the full size.

What are the major differences between your tinted moisturizer and foundations?
They all provide ample broad-spectrum sun protection, but the major differences are texture, amount of coverage, finish, and the skin types they are best suited for.

All Bases Covered Foundation SPF 15 is the best choice for those with normal to dry skin. Its moisturizing formula provides a natural soft matte finish and broad-spectrum SPF 15 protection using titanium dioxide as the sole active ingredient. This is also the preferred foundation for those with sensitive skin or rosacea.

Barely There Sheer Matte Tint SPF 20 is recommended for all skin types. This lightweight, slightly moisturizing tint provides sheer, subtle coverage, just a hint of colour (sheerer than the coverage you would get from either Paula's Choice foundation), and a natural matte finish. It also contains a range of water-binding agents and antioxidants, along with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide for broad-spectrum sun protection.

Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 is the ideal foundation for those with normal to oily skin. It has a fluid, very light texture that feels weightless and provides a long-lasting matte finish. This formula contains a blend of synthetic and mineral sunscreens for broad-spectrum sun protection.

Natural Finish Oil-Absorbing Makeup SPF 15 is the best choice for those with normal to oily/combination skin who want an oil-absorbing formula that provides sheer coverage. It contains avobenzone (rather than titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) for UVA protection, as avobenzone is less likely to clog pores.

Can your foundations/tint be used in conjunction with a regular sunscreen?
Yes but be aware that while layering sunscreens does provide longer and to some extent, better protection than wearing only one, how much extra protection you gain is unknown. For example, an SPF 15 sunscreen worn with an SPF 15 foundation may or may not create an SPF 30.

What is the difference between the newly reformulated version of the Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 and the previous version?
The previous version of Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 had a formula that separated, which required the bottle be shaken vigorously prior to application. Also, the pigment was suspended in such a way that the colour didn't appear to match skin tone until it was blended out. Despite a soft matte finish and excellent wearability, many customers found its appearance and application method unacceptable. The new version of Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 has all of the positives of the original, but without the undesirable aesthetics. For example, its match to natural skin tone is apparent from the moment you apply it. You will also notice that the new formulation provides slightly more coverage than the original and blends on effortlessly.

Is Best Face Forward Foundation similar to Revlon's ColourStay Lite or other ultra-matte foundations?
Not exactly. While not a true ultra-matte foundation, Best Face Forward Foundation does hold some advantages for this type of makeup. Unlike most ultra-matte foundations, Best Face Forward has movement, which allows more application time as you blend it over the skin. Although it does set relatively quickly to a genuine matte finish, you can still soften the end appearance of the foundation or blend away mistakes without causing streaking. Essentially, Best Face Forward Foundation is more forgiving than a traditional ultra-matte or transfer-resistant makeup.

I have oily skin that breaks out. Can I use Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 or Barely There Sheer Matte Tint SPF 20 without making my breakouts/blackheads worse?
It is impossible to say with certainty that this (or any other) product will not cause or exacerbate breakouts. That's because many factors are at play when it comes to the formation of blemishes, including those you don't have much (if any) control over, such as hormones, genetics, and the other products you are using on your face. The best you can do is experiment with any foundation and see how your skin responds. It is also important to avoid using moisturizers that may be too rich or thick for your skin.

Do I need to use a separate moisturizer with Barely There Sheer Matte Tint?
Unless you have dry skin or dry areas, Barely There Sheer Matte Tint can be used comfortably on its own. It is designed for all skin types, but someone with dry to very dry skin may prefer to apply a moisturizer first for additional hydration. Those with normal to oily skin will likely appreciate the light feel and natural matte finish Barely There Sheer Matte Tint provides, though for this skin type a lightweight moisturizer can be applied to dry areas if needed.

Powder

Which Paula's Choice powder colour should I choose?
For help determining which Paula's Choice powder colours will look best on you, please see the powder section of our Choosing the Right Paula's Choice Face Makeup for Your Skin Tone chart.

What is the difference between your Soft Pressed Powder and your Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15?
Both formulas are talc-based and provide a silky matte finish with natural-looking coverage. However, there are two primary differences between them: coverage and sun protection. The Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15 contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide for broad-spectrum sun protection, whereas the Soft Pressed Powder contains no sunscreen. The Healthy Finish Pressed Powder SPF 15 provides light to medium coverage while the Soft Pressed Powder delivers a slightly lighter, more translucent effect.

Other than the fact that one is loose and one is pressed, how is Skin Perfecting Loose Powder different from the other Paula's Choice powders?
Skin Perfecting Loose Powder has the lightest texture of all Paula's Choice powders. It also provides a sheerer coverage and a satin-matte, rather than traditional matte, finish.

I use one of Paula's Choice pressed powders. Should I switch to Skin Perfecting Loose Powder?
This is completely a matter of personal preference. Loose powders generally provide less coverage and a sheerer finish, and tend to be better for someone with blemished skin because the binding agents in most pressed powders can potentially clog pores. Someone with very oily skin who needs strong shine control would fare better with our Healthy Finish Pressed Powder or Soft Pressed Powder. Those with normal to dry, slightly oily, or combination skin (prone to blemishes or not) will find Skin Perfecting Loose Powder is an excellent option.

Do I need to wear powder over my foundation?
In some cases, yes, especially if you have oily or combination skin. Powder helps set foundation and prolong its wear time while offering a polished finish. It also facilitates smooth application of other powder-based products, such as blush and eyeshadow. The exceptions to this would be if you have dry skin and prefer the satin or dewy finish your foundation provides, and/or if you are using cream or cream-to-powder blush.

Cheeks

How do I know which blush colours to choose?
For help determining which Paula's Choice blush colours will look best on you, please see our Choosing Paula's Choice Blush Colours article.

Is Soft Matte Blush a powder or cream blush?
Paula's Choice Soft Matte Blush is a powder blush with an exceptionally silky-smooth texture that applies evenly and does not fade or streak throughout the day.

What is the difference between your Sheer Matte Blush and your Soft Matte Blush?
Our Soft Matte Blush has more pigment and can deposit more colour per application for those who want a more vivid or dramatic blush application or for medium to dark skin tones. Soft Matte Blush can be blended to a more sheer application. In contrast, Barely There Sheer Matte Blush has less pigment for softer, more translucent colour. Both formulas have silky textures that apply smoothly.

Is Paula's Choice blush oil-free?
Yes and no. Our original powder blush formula is oil-free. These colours include: Pale Rose, Dusty Rose, Pale Peach, and Contour Brown. Our newer colours also feature an all-new powder formula that does contain a small amount of mineral oil, used as a binding agent and texture enhancer. These shades include: Blossom, Sorbet, Healthy Blush, Primrose, Hint of Tan, Nude Pink, and Nectar.

Eyes

Which Paula's Choice Mascara is right for me?
It depends on your personal preference. If you want a mascara that lengthens and defines lashes, the Epic Lengths Mascara is an excellent choice. If you want to lengthen and build thickness, consider our Lush Mascara which quickly dramatizes and defines lashes without clumping. Both mascaras last all day without smearing or flaking, are safe for contact lens wearers, and are easily removed with a water-soluble cleanser.

Are Paula's Choice eyeshadows oil-free?
Yes and no. Our original formula (colours include Beige, Caramel, Charcoal Brown, Chocolate Kiss, Cream, Smoky Taupe, and Tan) is oil-free. Our newer colours, which use our all-new formula, contain a small amount of mineral oil, used as a binding agent and texture enhancer. These shades include: Beach, Cappuccino, Eggplant, Granite, Graphite, Hazelnut, Lavender Ice, Misty Plum, Moonlit, Nearly Nude, Pale Suede, Platinum, Shell, Smoldering Plum, Stormy Lavender, Stone, and Twilight.

Which Paula's Choice Soft Matte Eyeshadows go with my particular eye colour?
If you have blue eyes, these shades will accent them beautifully:
Beach, Beige, Cappuccino, Chiffon, Hazelnut, Nearly Nude, Pale Suede, and Smoky Taupe.

If you have green or hazel eyes, these shades will accent them beautifully:
Cream, Granite, Malt, Nougat, Pale Suede, Shell, Stone, Tan, and Twilight.

If you have brown eyes, any of our shades will accent them beautifully. Choosing shades within our Classic Browns range provides subtle enhancement of brown eyes, while choosing from the Mauves/Plums or Taupes/Grays adds extra emphasis.

I am having difficulty applying your Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner evenly and it tends to flake. Any suggestions?
Applying a unique, water-resistant product like the Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner does take some practice before it becomes second nature. We recommend following these steps to achieve a perfect application:

  • Gently stroke the flat side of a Paula's Choice Eyeliner brush over the gel. It only takes a small amount to line the eye.
  • If you get too much eyeliner on the brush, use a tissue to carefully wipe off any excess before applying as too much may cause flaking.
  • For the upper lash line, begin at the inner corner of the eye, placing the brush against your lash line as close to the lashes as possible. Move the brush from the inner to outer corner in one fluid motion.
  • If you miss a spot, go over the area immediately. Do not wait for the product to dry. Once the eyeliner has set into place, applying more may cause flaking.
  • Do not layer the Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner. Too many layers may cause flaking.
  • Follow the same application technique for the lower lash line, but start with even less product on the brush (the lower lash line should appear thinner and softer than the upper lash line).

How do I know which shade of Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner to choose?
Selecting eyeliner shades is far easier and more foolproof than choosing colours for other types of makeup, such as blush or lipstick. All three shades of our Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner are suitable for a wide variety of skin tones, complement every eye colour, accentuate lashes, and work beautifully with most eyeshadow combinations. If you’re looking for a subtle, soft brown eyeliner, choose Earthen, our lightest shade. Accent your lash line for a more classic eyeliner look with deep brown Espresso. If you prefer a bit more depth to your eyeliner, Nightfall is the shade for you. A hint of plum undertones present an attractive twist on basic black, and look stunning on medium to dark skin tones or anyone wanting a more dramatic effect.

Lips

Which Paula's Choice lipsticks will look best with my blush colour?
For help pairing Paula's Choice lipstick with Paula's Choice blush, please see our Cosmetic Combos: Pairing Paula's Choice Blush & Lipstick article.

How is Constant Colour Lip Paint different from Paula's Choice lipsticks?
Unlike our other lipsticks, Constant Colour Lip Paint is not a traditional oil- and wax-based lipstick. Rather, it is a liquid lipstick whose formula is designed to be long-wearing while maintaining smooth, even colour and a comfortable, slightly moist feel. It is a versatile product that can be worn alone or combined with your favorite lipstick or lip gloss.

Is Constant Colour Lip Paint a lip stain or lip ink-type product?
No. Most lip stains or inks are fluid products without emollience. They are often watery and go on translucent but leave a long-lasting stain that may wear unevenly. Constant Colour Lip Paint provides the smooth coverage and opacity of a traditional lipstick with the long-wearing properties of a lip stain—you get the best of both worlds!

Does Constant Colour Lip Paint offer the most coverage of the Paula's Choice Lipsticks?
For the most part, yes, though there are some very soft colours to choose from. Each shade of Constant Colour Lip Paint provides an opaque colour deposit that is a necessary part of this product's longevity. Our Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15 provides sheer to light coverage, Soft Cream Lipstick provides medium coverage, and Smooth Matte Lipstick provides medium to full coverage depending on the shade.

My lips are chapped and very dry. Can I still use Constant Colour Lip Paint?
You can, but you will need to prep your lips first. Whether matte or creamy, no lip colour product looks good when applied over dry, chapped lips. If your lips are less than smooth before applying Constant Colour Lip Paint, we recommend the following:

1.       Remove excess dry, flaky skin using Paula's Choice Exfoliating Treatment.

2.       Apply a thin layer of Paula's Choice Lip & Body Treatment Balm.

3.       Use a tissue to gently dab excess lip balm and apply Constant Colour Lip Paint as directed.

Please note that unless the visible signs and symptoms of chapped or cracked lips are corrected, combining Constant Colour Lip Paint with a creamy lipstick or lip gloss will not produce satisfactory results.

Steps 1 and 2 above can be used as a nightly routine to keep chapped lips from recurring and ensure a beautifully smooth application of Constant Colour Lip Paint each morning.

How do I remove Constant Colour Lip Paint?
You can easily remove it with our Gentle Touch Makeup Remover.

Besides sunscreen, what is the difference between Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15 and Soft Cream Lipstick?
The two main differences are the amount of coverage and the texture. Soft Cream Lipstick is a more emollient formula that offers medium to full coverage and a creamy finish. Sheer Cream Lipstick offers sheer to light coverage and a glossier, shimmery finish. Every Sheer Cream Lipstick shade has shimmer, while most Soft Cream Lipsticks do not.

Why did Paula use avobenzone instead of titanium dioxide or zinc oxide in the Sheer Cream Lipstick?
Paula chose avobenzone because both titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are rather opaque mineral sunscreens and it is difficult to create aesthetically pleasing sheer colours with them. In order to achieve an SPF 15 rating, the percentages of titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide required would have created a fuller coverage lipstick whose colours would be dulled by the matte finish these ingredients have.

Since it is so sheer, is there enough sunscreen in the Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15 to protect my lips?
Absolutely—the sheerness of each colour has no bearing on the level of sun protection obtained from this lipstick, because the amount of active ingredients is such that an SPF 15 is achieved regardless of how much pigment is used. The sunscreens in the Sheer Cream Lipsticks were tested every bit as thoroughly as any of our facial sunscreens. The same battery of FDA-required testing was performed to ensure the SPF 15 claim is valid.

Will it affect the sunscreen if I apply lip gloss over Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15?
Yes, it will, but how much the sunscreen will be affected is unknown. Applying lip gloss over Sheer Cream Lipstick will not cancel out the sunscreen, but it will dilute it, just as applying moisturizer over a facial sunscreen dilutes that. If you do not plan on spending much time outdoors and want a glossier finish while wearing this product, it is OK to apply a light layer of lip gloss. However, if you want sufficient sun protection for a long day (more than two hours) outdoors, it is best to skip the gloss and apply extra Sheer Cream Lipstick to obtain a shinier finish.

Should I apply my lip balm before or after applying Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15?
It depends on whether or not your lip balm contains an effective sunscreen. If you use Paula's Choice Moisturizing Lipscreen SPF 15, it does not matter if you apply it before or after Sheer Cream Lipstick (though afterwards will dilute the colour). If you use a lip balm without sunscreen (or without UVA-protecting ingredients), it is imperative to apply it before Sheer Cream Lipstick SPF 15.

Will the other Paula's Choice lipsticks eventually have sunscreen too?
At this time, there are no plans to reformulate our other lipsticks to include sunscreen.

Evening Glow

Do I need a different cleanser or special makeup remover to take off the Evening Glow products?
No. All Paula's Choice facial cleansers will easily remove any of our shimmer products. You may also use the Gentle Touch Makeup Remover.

Are the Evening Glow products OK for those with blemish-prone skin?
Yes. With the exception of the Liquid Diamonds High Shine Lip Gloss, all of the Evening Glow products contain ingredients that do not clog pores or feel heavy on the skin. However, even careful formulation cannot guarantee someone will not break out because there are so many variables (hormones, ingredient allergies, mixed product interactions, etc.) that determine how someone's skin can react to a particular cosmetic product. Liquid Diamonds High Shine Lip Gloss does contain thick, emollient ingredients that give it a luxurious texture and very glossy finish, but since it is applied to lips, there is no reason to be concerned about these ingredients clogging pores (lips do not break out).

I thought Paula was opposed to shine. Why does she sell products with shimmer?
Paula has traditionally not been a fan of shiny products because they tend to accentuate lines and wrinkles (particularly around the eyes). However, she has always said that strategically placed shine can add drama to an evening or "glamour" look and she recognizes that many women, regardless of age, like to add an element of shimmer (be it liquid or powder). As long as it is used judiciously and applied to enhance, rather than detract from, a woman's beauty, Paula believes that shimmer can be a fun element in makeup. For a longer explanation from Paula, please read Paula's To Bling or Not to Bling? article.

I've heard that shimmer products diffuse light by creating a prismatic effect, and therefore reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Does the Sheer Shimmer Illuminating Liquid have this effect?
All shimmer products can help diffuse light because light will bounce off the shiny particles rather than be absorbed by them but shimmer products do not reduce the appearance of wrinkles. If anything, shine tends to make wrinkles more visible, especially over the eye area. If wrinkles are a concern but you still want some shine, our Sheer Shimmer Illuminating Liquid does offer a very subtle shimmer finish and gives skin more of a soft glow rather than an obvious shine. However, we still recommend that you do not apply any shimmer directly over obviously wrinkled areas.

How does Paula's Choice Evening Glow line compare to other shimmer products?
Overall, our shimmer products are easier to work with, have exceptionally smooth textures, blend on evenly, and contain no obvious glitter. Best of all, the shimmer and glow has excellent staying power, clinging to your skin, not your clothes. Each product in the Evening Glow collection has its own unique properties that allow you to experiment with a variety of finishes, from refined high shine to a subtle glow.

Nails

Are the Paula's Choice Polished to Perfection Nail Lacquer shades as dark as they appear in the catalog and on the Web site?
Most of them go on much lighter than they appear in print and on computer monitors. Nail polish has unique characteristics that make it difficult to represent colour 100% accurately in print or online. We make every effort to fine-tune the colours so they are as true as possible, but limitations do exist.

What is toluene, and why is your nail polish toluene-free?
Toluene is a solvent used in many nail polishes (including major professional and drugstore brands). Toluene's function is to help nail polish go on smoothly, adhere evenly to the nail, and give nail polish its unique characteristics (Source: emedicine.com/derm/topic507.htm). While toluene helps nail polish perform beautifully, it is considered a strong sensitizing agent, a toxic inhalant, and has a high risk of causing severe contact dermatitis and eye irritation. There is even risk that overexposure (which can occur if you are using nail polish with toluene in an area that is not well-ventilated, a concern mostly for manicurists) can result in central nervous system problems (Source: Handbook of Cosmetic and Personal Care Additives, Second Edition, Volume 2, 2002, page 1,571). Since 1991, Toluene has been recognized by the state of California as a chemical known to cause reproductive toxicity (Source: prevention-news.com/1997/calif.htm). Clearly, this is not an ingredient to take lightly, and one that is no longer essential to an effective nail polish formulation. I am pleased to have worked with a knowledgeable team of chemists who specialize in nail polish formulation and who produced a product that I believe performs every bit as well as the brands I have experienced in nail salons and from major cosmetics companies such as OPI, L'Oreal, Revlon, and Sally Hansen.

Note: Toluene may also appear on ingredient labels as benzene, methyl-methylbenzene, or toluol (Source: International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, Ninth Edition, 2002, page 1,724). Toluene is also used with formaldehyde (another problematic ingredient that functions primarily as a preservative) in the form of toluene sulfonamide/formaldehyde resin.

What is dibutyl phthalate?
Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) has been a very common nail polish ingredient for years. It is used as a plasticizer and is a key component in giving nail polish its unique properties. But a lot of women (and a lot of companies selling nail polish) are giving their nail polishes a second look since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, http://www.cdc.gov) published the National Report on Human Exposure to Environmental Chemicals—Results for Mono-butyl phthalate [which is] (metabolized from Dibutyl phthalate). Basically the CDC found measurable levels of phthalate in the urine of the participants in a study looking at the issue of phthalates. However, the CDC stated that "Finding a measurable amount of one or more phthalate metabolites in urine does not mean that the level of one or more phthalates causes an adverse health effect. Whether phthalates at the levels of metabolites reported here are a cause for health concern is not yet known; more research is needed" (Sources: CDC, http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/dls/report/results/Mono-butylPhthalate.htm; Environmental Health Perspectives, December 2000, volume 108, issue 12).

Brushes & Accessories

How often should I wash my brushes?
If you use the same basic colours and reserve your makeup brushes for your own use, washing them once every 2–3 months should suffice. Washing natural hair brushes too often can break down the shaft. Also, frequent washing can loosen the glue in the handle that holds the bristles together and keeps them in place. When cleaning the brushes, concentrate your effort on the bristles, not the handle. The exception to this is our Eyeliner brushes when they are used with Paula's Choice Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner. You must wash the brush gently with a cleanser and water after every application to be sure you've removed the product from the brush. If not, the gel will harden on the brush making it difficult to use again.

What should I use to wash my brushes?
Use an inexpensive gentle shampoo instead of pricey brush-cleaning solutions, which are just shampoo anyway. The shampoo shouldn't contain any conditioning agents, which can build up on the brush just like they do on the hair. Paula's Choice All Over Hair & Body Shampoo is an excellent option. Conditioner is not necessary when caring for your brushes.

Exactly how should I clean my brushes?
Here's a step-by-step guide to brush care:

  • Gently but thoroughly wash the brush with gentle shampoo in tepid water.
  • Meticulously rinse the brush with tepid water, until water runs clear.
  • Carefully press out excess water from bristles and dab the brush dry.
  • Arrange the bristles back into their original shape.
  • Let the brush air dry on a towel without the help of a blow dryer (blow drying can damage bristles).

How do I clean my eyeliner brush after using Constant Colour Gel Eyeliner?
A liquid makeup remover such as Paula's Choice Gentle Touch Makeup Remover works beautifully to remove product from your eyeliner brush and keep it looking new. Simply pour a small amount of makeup remover onto a cotton round and swipe your brush across the round until clean.

When should I replace my brushes?
Replace them if they become misshapen, frayed, or start shedding excessively, or if the brush handle becomes loose or splintered.

How can the brushes be high quality yet so affordably priced?
The fact is even the best, most luxurious makeup brushes are not costly to make. Our brushes are customized for us from a major supplier and we buy in bulk, which keeps the cost to you down.

What are Paula's Choice brushes made of?
The handles are wood and our brushes feature natural hair, except for the Concealer Brush and Precision Liner Brush, which are made of synthetic material.

What is the difference between the Precision Liner Brush and the Eyeliner Brush?
The Precision Liner Brush has a sleek, tapered shape and firmer bristles that make it versatile enough to create a range of lines, from thick and smudged to thin and precise, depending on how you hold the brush. The Eyeliner Brush has a soft, fine point that allows for precision accuracy when creating a thin, exact line.

How big are the brush heads on the Mini Brush Set?
The brush heads on the Mini Brush Set are comparable in functionality, shape, and density to the brush heads on our regular-size brushes. Specifically, the Powder and Blush brushes in the mini set are approximately half the size of our regular-size brushes. The remaining 4 brush heads are the same size as the regular brushes.

Will Paula be coming out with larger packs of the Oil-Blotting Papers (more per pack)?
At this time, this is not in the works. At the current price ($4.95 for 100 sheets), these remain one of the most economical oil-blotting papers available.

Do the Oil-Blotting Papers have powder on them?
No. Blotting papers with powder tend to unevenly distribute powder on the skin making it looking choppy and uneven.

What are the Makeup Application Sponges made of?
Our sponges are made of synthetic latex. Synthetic latex lacks the plant constituents found in natural latex that are believed to cause allergic reactions and contact dermatitis.

Makeup Miscellaneous

I think I look good in cool (pink, rose, mauve) and warm (auburn, chestnut, peach) colours. Should I wear both?
You certainly can – why not take advantage of this and broaden your colour palette?

My makeup won't stay put in the summer. What can I do?
First, avoid moisturizer. On oily skin (or oily areas) and in hot, humid weather, nothing will melt makeup faster than moisturizer. Apply a matte finish foundation with sunscreen over bare skin, and set with loose or pressed powder for the most longevity. Carry Oil-Blotting papers with you and use throughout the day to absorb any excess oil or perspiration, then touch-up with a dusting of pressed powder.

Will Paula be coming out with new colour choices?
Yes, Paula is continually evaluating her makeup line to be certain that the colours she offers are not only beautiful and easy to use, but also broad enough to satisfy the needs of a wide variety of skin tones and tastes.
